KCST radio to host live candidate forum today
There are 25 candidates
seeking election to 13 different
local government positions on
the May 16 ballot. That’s the
most choices Florence area
voters have had in many years.
In addition to that, Lane
County residents are being
asked whether or not they want
to renew an additional property
tax levy that has been generat-
ing an extra $5,000,000 a year
to operate the jail and fund
youth treatment services.
How do you get answers to
your questions about the differ-
ent candidates and the levy?
A voters guide published last
week in the Siuslaw News has
a lot of information, but some-
times you want to hear from the
candidate live.
That information will be fea-
tured today, May 3, on a special
live edition of Coast Radio’s
“Our Town,” the monthly

WEDNESDAY THURSDAY
what they see as the real issues
facing us today.”
The former KCST-KCFM
News Director lamented the
fact that political opponents are
often demonized by the opposi-
tion.
That’s why the Our Town
Candidates Forum will not be a
debate. Despite earlier media
characterizations as such, this
week's forum is intended to
give candidates a chance to talk
about themselves.
Audience members will
have a chance to chime in with
questions. But that chance may
be somewhat limited because
of time constraints.
“I know three hours sounds
like a long time, but when you
split that up between 23 people,
it really gives each person a
short amount of time,”
Sneddon said.
He added that he hoped
audience members would
understand and those who do
get a chance to ask a question
should be brief and succinct.
Ballots for the May 16 elec-
tion were mailed out April 27
and households in Lane County
began receiving them over the
weekend.
Historical results have
shown that fewer than 20 per-
cent of voters in Oregon return
their ballot in the first week, so
by attending or listening to the
Our Town Forum, people
should have a good chance to
become better informed.
If you can’t attend the live
presentation at the events cen-
ter, or listen to it Wednesday
afternoon, there will be a spe-
cial encore presentation of Our
Town on Thursday, May 4, on
KCFM AM1250/FM 104.1.
It will begin at 10 a.m. and
will replay, unedited, through
the entire length of the show.
This month’s Our Town will
be a bittersweet one for
Sneddon, who started doing the
program in January 1999. This
will be his last show as host.
New host George Henry has
already taken over Sneddon's
news responsibilities at Coast
Radio and his first official Our
Town will air on Wednesday,
June 7, on KCST.
“But, this likely won’t be my
final appearance on the show”,
said Sneddon. “I made George
promise to invite me back to do
an interview from time to time
in the future.”
Our Town is a production of
Coast Radio News. It is co-pro-
duced by Sneddon and Michael
Simmons.

will have a conversation with
Lane County Sheriff Byron
Trapp about the jail levy exten-
sion and what the money has
been used for; and why more is
needed.
In addition to the sheriff, 23
of the 25 candidates will voice
their concerns, qualifications
and opinions over the course of
three hours.
To give voters a better, “up
close” look at the candidates,
Our Town will be originating
live from the Florence Events
Center (FEC), 715 Quince St.,
and this month’s program will
span three hours to give a
chance for everybody to
express themselves.
Audience members at the
FEC will also have a chance to
chime in with questions.
The forum will be moderat-
ed by Sneddon, whose focus
will be on pointing out the pos-
itive differences between the
candidates.
“I’ve been very concerned
over the trend in recent years
for campaigns to focus on neg-
ative aspects,” he said. “I wish
more candidates would spend
time talking about how they
would deal with things and
