landed sixth in the discus at
142-8.
Junior leaper Kyle King
was eighth in the triple jump
with a personal-best mark of

Siuslaw was 11th out of 26
teams overall.
The Viks will be on the
road this Friday in Cottage
Grove for the Wally Ciochetti
Invitational.
The Far West League dis-
trict meet will be held Friday,
May 12, at North Bend, with
the state championships set
for Friday and Saturday, May
19-20, at the University of
Oregon’s Hayward Field in
Eugene.

The loss puts the Vikings at
1-8 in the Far West (1-15 over-
all.), with South Umpqua hold-
ing second place at 6-3 (7-11
overall.)
The Vikings will travel to
Brookings-Harbor Friday for a
doubleheader beginning at 3
p.m.
They’ll close the season with
a three-game match-up against
North Bend beginning at 5 p.m.
next Monday, May 8, at North
Bend, then with a doubleheader
at home against the Bulldogs
on Thursday, May 11.
Around the softball dia-
mond: Siuslaw junior second
baseman Ariel Rosinbaum
went 2-for-3 with a pair of
RBIs in the opener against
stocked and are fishing well.
The 2017 trout stocking sched-
ule is available online.
Steelhead fishing is open on
the Alsea River and listed trib-
utaries until April 30. Casting
spinners, drifting bait or using
a bobber and jig can be effec-
tive.
SALMON RIVER: Steelhead
The Salmon River closed
for wild and hatchery steel-
head on March 31 to protect
spawning wild steelhead
SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead,
Chinook
The Siletz River is open for
wild Chinook (1 per day and 2
per season). A few summer
steelhead are starting to be
caught in the lower river.
Steelhead fishing is fair. Drift
boaters are having success
from Moonshine Park to
Siletz and bank anglers are
catching hatchery fish in the
Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drifting
bait or using a bobber and jig
can be effective.

However, the Lady Viking
offense had little luck against
the Lancers’ Tayah Kelley, a
sophomore who struck out 17
Siuslaw batters in 11 innings of
play for the sweep.
Kelley also had 7 RBIs and 2
homers in addition to being the
winning pitcher in both games.
The visiting Lancers swept
Siuslaw, 19-5 and 19-0.

The Wilson is in decent
shape. Steelhead should be
winding down but there was
still some good fishing last
week, although mostly for
wild steelhead.
YAQUINA RIVER:
Steelhead
The Yaquina River and Big
Elk Cr. are closed for steel-
head fishing to protect spawn-
ing wild steelhead.
COOS RIVER BASIN:
Dungeness crab, bay clams,
rockfish, steelhead
Trout fishing in streams is
closed until May 22.
Most anglers have stopped
fishing for steelhead in the
Coos Basin. Rivers in the
Coos basin are open to steel-
head fishing until April 30.
Anglers fishing the South Fork
Coos River above Dellwood
will need a permit from
Weyerhaeuser.
In the Coos basin, one addi-
tional hatchery steelhead may
be retained per day for a total
aggregate of three adult fish
harvested daily.
Anglers are still catching a
few rockfish and surfperch
along the jetties and sub-
merged rock piles. Fishing for
rockfish in the bay has been
stolen base in game two. She
also struck out 10 Lancers.
Siuslaw fell to 1-8 in league
and 4-14 overall.
Siuslaw hosts Brookings-
Harbor in a doubleheader
Friday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
before hosting the final home
game on Monday, May 8,
against North Bend.
First pitch is at 5 p.m.
The Lady Viks will then
travel to North Bend for a dou-
bleheader May 11 to finish the
season.
Games are at 3 and 5 p.m.

bag limit for bottom fish
(rockfish) is seven fish and a
separate daily limit for lingcod
(two).
The 7 fish marine bag limit
will remain in place, with
these adjustments for 2017:
Create a sub-bag limit of 6
black rockfish, remove the
sub-bag limit for canary rock-
fish, Add China/quillback/
copper rockfishes to the sub-
bag limit with blue/Deacon
rockfish and change the limit
from 3 to 4.
Finally remove the 10-inch
minimum size for kelp green-
ling. Retention of cabezon is
not allowed until July 1.
Recreational crabbing is
open inside the Coos Bay estu-
ary. Crabbing has been slow in
Coos Bay but crabbers will
need to sort through several
short crab to find keepers.
Recreational harvest of bay
clams remains open along the
entire Oregon coast.
Clamming is excellent dur-
ing low tides near Charleston,
off Cape Arago Highway, and
Clam Island. There are also
good places to dig clams even
on positive low tides in Coos
Bay.
