Mapleton School District
awarded $2.9 million
seismic grant
M
apleton School
District
has
received $2.9 million in
grant funding from
Business Oregon to
rehabilitate Mapleton
Elementary School and
Mapleton High School
to better prepare and
withstand a major earth-
quake.
Business Oregon, the
state’s economic devel-
opment agency, award-
ed 100 grants totaling
$125,000,000 to Oregon
schools and colleges.
Other Lane County dis-
tricts included in this
round of granting were
Junction City School
District (Oaklea Middle
School — $1,499,565),
Lowell School District
(Lundy Elementary —
$1,334,280) and South
Lane (Lincoln Middle
School — $2,164,130).
Mapleton Elementary
School
received
$1,409,104 for retrofit
projects
including
installing new shear
walls, anchor bolts, roof
sheathing and straps,
and infilling the exist-
ing soft story.
Mapleton High School
received $1,500,000
million for retrofit proj-
ects including installing
new shear walls, anchor
blots and removing the
existing glass block
windows. Blocking and
additional edge nailing
in the high school gym-
nasium
will
also
increase the capacity of
the existing unblocked
diaphragm.
Since passing a $4
million general obliga-
tion bond in May 2016
and
receiving
the
matching $4 million
grant from the state of
Oregon,
Mapleton
School District contin-
ued to seek additional
funding. The seismic
grant will allow the dis-
trict to increase the
scope of the planned
bond projects to include
costly seismic improve-
ments.
In addition to the seis-
mic grant, the district
has
also
received
$75,000 in grant funds
from USDA and ODE
for other construction
projects.

O
n April 1, students from Mapleton School
District joined the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach
Cleanup. Ten students from Mapleton middle and
high schools volunteered to search for litter and
debris on the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River. The
students enjoyed a beautiful day with no wind or
rain! According
to SOLVE, nearly
5,000 volunteers
removed an
estimated 56,000
pounds of litter
and marine debris
from along all 362
miles of the Ore-
gon coast. — Sub-

Organizer Meg Spencer, Sius-
law Public Library director and
Rotarian, said, “Each contestant
this year did an amazing job of
engaging the audience and talk-
ing about issues in the world
they are passionate about in
light of the 4 Way Test. Any of
these four young people could
have done a great job represent-
ing our region at the district
level.”
Gibney will go on to compete
at the regional level in May in
Albany.
Gibney shared with her audi-
ence that she will use her prize
money to fund part of the cost
of participating in a 4-H Inter-
national program to South Ko-
rea this summer. — Submitted
