dedicated to protecting human
rights for everyone of all gen-

grounds will be meeting with a
representative of the Florence
Police Department to answer
questions concerning citizen
protections, the public safety
plan and policies concerning
vulnerable populations.
The meeting will be held
Friday, April 28, at 3 p.m., in
the Bromley Room of the
Siuslaw Public Library.
The public is invited to
attend.
Peoples’ Climate March set for Saturday in Florence
Florence’s way of life is
dependent upon the well being
of the forests, river, lakes and
ocean that surrounds it.
The community is invited to
show its support for clean air,
pure water, responsible forestry
and a healthy ocean during the
Peoples’ Climate March on
Saturday, April 25, at 10:30
a.m.
The march will gather in the
parking lot of Old School
Furniture on Highway 101.
Park in the Florence Events
Center overflow parking lot.
The Marchers will walk
north on Highway 101 to the
four corners at Highway 126,
where the group will spread out
and wave signs.
There will be two cars to
help transport those who need
physical assistance.
Mapleton schools awarded 2.9 million dollar grant

awarded 100 grants totaling
$125,000,000 to Oregon
schools and colleges.
Other Lane County districts
included in this round of grant-
ing were Junction City School
District (Oaklea Middle School
$1,499,565), Lowell School
District (Lundy Elementary
$1,334,280) and South Lane
(Lincoln
Middle
School
$2,164,130).
Mapleton
Elementary
School received $1,409,104 for
retrofit projects including
installing new shear walls,
anchor bolts, roof sheathing
and straps, and infilling the
existing soft story.
Mapleton High School
received $1,500,000 million
for retrofit projects including
installing new shear walls,
anchor blots, and removing the
existing glass block windows.
Blocking and additional
edge nailing in the high school
gymnasium will also increase
the capacity of the existing
unblocked diaphragm.
Since passing a $4 million
general obligation bond in May
2016 (and receiving the match-
ing $4 million grant from the
state of Oregon) Mapleton
School District continued to
seek additional funding.
The seismic grant will allow
the district to increase the
scope of the planned bond proj-
ects to include costly seismic
improvements.
In addition to the seismic
grant the district has also
received $75,000 in grant funds
from USDA and ODE for other
construction projects.
