Most of the North Coast
lakes were stocked with
trout this week. Water
temps are great and fish
should be hungry.
So far this season, Town
Lake near Pacific City has
been stocked with nearly
200 surplus summer steel-
head from Cedar Creek
Hatchery. In addition, 66
early run winter steelhead
were released there on Jan.
11. Nehalem Hatchery
released 200 surplus winter
steelhead into Vernonia
pond, 57 into Lost Lake
and 60 into Lake Lytle.
These fish get fairly active
in the lake and offer a
unique fishing experience,
especially when the rivers
are blown out. Once in the
lake they are considered
“trout” and do not require a
Combined Angling Tag.
Anglers are reminded,
however, that only one
trout per day over 20 inch-
es may be retained, and
these fish will almost all be
in that size range.
The 2017 trout stocking
schedule is available
online.
During Friday’s Central Coast
Invitational (CCI) at Siuslaw High
School, track teams from nine different
schools and all six state classifications
were on hand for what many used as a
tune-up in preparation for fast-
approaching district competition.
While many athletes were working
on form and technique, over at the dis-
cus cage Viking junior Trent Reavis
was busy launching a new school
record that bested Siuslaw’s previous
mark by more than 2 feet.
The throw, which landed at 160 feet,
2 inches, bumped the previous record
of 158-10, set by Thomas-Dotson in
2003, to No. 2.
The record-breaking throw was an
11-foot improvement for Reavis, who
has actually been knocking on the door
of a new school record in the shot put
since last April, when he tossed the
steal ball 51-2.5. The mark landed him
within a foot of the 1972 school record
of 52-1 set by Bruce Plaep.
Considering Reavis entered Friday’s
invitational with a personal-best discus
throw of 149-2 last May, it seems only
a matter of time before his momentum
in the throws helps him surpass Plaep’s
45-year-old shot put record.

The Viking baseball and softball
teams had their hands full Friday, tak-
ing on Douglas in doubleheaders that
capped a round-robin week of play
against the Trojans.
At home, the Vikings boys picked up
their first win of the season in a hard-
fought overtime win in the opener, that
came on a hit from senior first baseman
Brogan Cornish. The single drove in
the winning run in the bottom of the
eighth inning for a slim 8-7 win over
Douglas.
The Trojans went on to split the dou-
bleheader and win the nightcap, 5-2.
The split put Siuslaw at 1-12 overall
