SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 2017 BIRTHS OBITUARIES SIMS—Virginia Yvonne Sims, 84, of Florence, passed away March 13, 2017. She was born Jan. 22, 1933, and had lived in the Florence for many years. Mrs. Sims was a member of the Florence Baptist Church. She is survived by her hus- band, Gene Sims, to whom she was married on Nov. 8, 1954, and they enjoyed more than 62 years together. She is also survived by her children: Sandra Bray and David Bray (spouse Sandra), Kenneth Cook and Teresa Sims Schaefers; a sister, Bernice Brown of Alaska; nine grand- children and five great-grand- children. A memorial celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 22, at 2 p.m., at the Florence Baptist Church. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. FILIPOWICZ—Barbara Jean Filipowicz, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Portland, Ore., while surrounded by her hus- band and children fol- lowing a brief illness. Barbara was born on Barbara May 9, Filipowicz 1926, in Calais, Maine, the daughter of David and Sadie Anderson (Kelley). She was raised in Calais but moved to Manchester, N.H., to pursue work. That is where she met the love of her life, Charlie, on a blind date in December of 1950. They married in September of 1952 and moved to the Southern California area in January of 1957, raising four children. In 1990, Barbara retired from First Interstate Bank, where she had worked as a mortgage loan processor. Barbara and Charlie then moved to the coastal town of Florence, where they happily lived for 22 years. She loved to collect small rocks from the beach. She leaves behind her hus- band of 65 years, Charles; her son Stephen and his wife Sharon; son John and his com- panion Stephanie; daughter Christina and her husband Larry Collings; daughter Regina; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; many friends in Florence and at her retirement home for the last three years, The Courtyard at Mt. Tabor in Portland. She will truly be missed. Services will be held at St Ignatius Catholic Church on April 25, at 10 a.m. Barbara will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery. BRANNON— Francis Henry Brannon, a male weigh- ing 6 lbs., 5.5 ozs., was born to Katelyn Michelle Mitchell and Marshall Harry Brannon of Mapleton on April 2, 2017, at 9:35 p.m., at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center. City seeks applicants for new advisory committee The City of Florence has recently established a short- term ad-hoc committee called the Housing and Economic Opportunities Committee. This group will be a working committee charged with com- pleting the Buildable Lands Inventory and Housing and Economic Opportunities Analysis. The committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council and staff in matters pertaining to affordable and workforce housing as well as economic development and job creation. The committee will review work products and provide rec- ommendations on key project issues and decisions, providing guidance on scenarios and pol- icy options and guiding stake- holder and community engage- ment strategies. “Committee members will be invaluable to ensuring the communities voice is heard as the city makes some high level policy decisions on these topics that effect everyone,” says City Manager Erin Reynolds. The City is looking for com- munity members who represent a broad spectrum of communi- ty housing and economic development interests. The committee will meet at approximately four meetings over the course of six months and will also be responsible for research and community out- reach in between meetings.
