Rotary Club seeks ‘4-Way’ speech contestants
The Rotary Club of Florence
is looking for contestants for its
annual 4-Way Test high school
speech contest.
Contest winners will share
$1,000 in cash prizes.
Any high school student in
the Florence or Mapleton area,
public, private or home-
schooled, grades 9-12, are eli-
gible to debate the ethical stan-
dards and behavior in today’s
world.
The Rotary Club of Florence
invites students to share a sub-
ject they care about by partici-
pating in the 4-Way Test
Speech Contest, which will be
held Thursday, April 13, at 4
p.m. at the Florence Event
Center.
Three finalists will then
present their speeches and
receive certificates and cash
prizes totaling $1,000 at a
Rotary meeting at noon on
Tuesday, April 18.
The winning speaker will
also be invited to compete in
the district level contest in
Albany, Ore., on the weekend
of May 20.
First prize in the contest is
$500, second prize is $350, and
third prize is $150.
All participants will be
required to take the Rotary 4-
Way Test and apply it to real
life throughout their speeches.
The 4-Way Test has four
principles:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build good will and
better friendship?
4. Will it be beneficial to all
concerned?
The choices for topics are
endless.
Would the Super Bowl pass
the 4-Way Test? What about
homework assignments? How
about social networking?
All speeches must be origi-
nal and may not be less than
five minutes or more than
seven minutes.
For information on partici-
pating, contact Meg Spencer,
Committee Chair, at 541-999-
2627, or the speech coordinator
at either Siuslaw or Mapleton
high school.

A word to the wise: Don’t
decide that you will never qual-
ify for a scholarship.
Apply and then let the
awarding organization make
that determination.
Many scholarship winners
are surprised how many stu-
dents receive scholarships who
say they never thought that
they might qualify.
Students with the best grades
are not the only ones who earn
scholarships. Many organiza-
tions prefer to award scholar-
ships to those who might not
get the highest grades or SATs
but show promise of future
success and the ability and
desire to return to this commu-
nity and share their talents and
skills locally.
Last year, Western Lane
Community Foundation award-
ed over $25,000 in scholarships
and since its founding has
awarded well over $275,000 to
both Mapleton and Siuslaw
graduating seniors.
Home schooled students are
not eligible for these scholar-
ships but certainly are for the
continuing education scholar-
ships available during the sum-
mer.
Watch
for
upcoming
announcements concerning a
specific LCC nursing scholar-
ship and our third annual schol-
arships designed for already
graduated students, re-entry
students, home schooled and
other career changing adults.
For

scholarships, contact school
counselors or the WLCF office
at 541-997-1274.
