for a public art project grew
into a business collaboration
and community celebration of
the arts.
Oregon Festivals and Events
Association honored the
Friends of the FEC during its
annual Ovation Awards on
March 7 at Seaside Convention
Center.
Connor said, “We were nom-
inated for the Ovation Impact
Award. There were probably
five or six others in that catego-
ry, so I was really surprised
when we received it.”
According to the events
association, the Impact Award
is for an event that had “a great
and unique” impact culturally
or financially on a community.
In order to be nominated,
events had to be open to the
public, have broad public sup-
port and potential tourist appeal
and be primarily celebratory in
nature, with a focus on enter-
tainment, education, culture,
athletics or community pride.
Connor said she talked with
the awards committee chair-
man Scott Ingalls afterward.
“I expressed how surprised
we were to win, and he said it
was a really easy choice,” she
said. “He said it was easy
because of the impact of how
many people saw and experi-
enced the public art as an activ-
ity at no charge. He said that
put it over and above the oth-
ers.”
She estimates that more than
10,000 people saw the 20 fiber-
glass Stellar sea lions in 2016,
and that people continue to ask
questions, take pictures and
post on social media about the
project.
“We were thinking of the
events center, and how it has
been an art gallery for 20 years.
We wanted to bring awareness
to the fact that the arts generate
out into the community,”
Connor said.
The local community also
honored the Friends of the FEC

JACK DAVIS/SIUSLAW NEWS
Friends of the Florence Events Center and staff members stand together after winning
the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce Siuslaw Award for Innovation in Business in
February. The recognition is one of two recent awards honoring the program’s influ-
ence in promoting public art, area tourism and community businesses.
with the Innovation in Business
Award during the Florence
Area Chamber of Commerce
Siuslaw Awards in February.
During the Siuslaw Awards,
Friends of the FEC President
Margaret McDiarmid said,
“Innovation like that doesn’t
come along very often, so
we’re very proud to have
Jennifer.”
“Originally, I didn’t think of
it as a business project; it was a
celebration project,” Connor
said. “Since then it has turned
into the public art aspect, the
economic impact for business-
es to have foot traffic and gen-
erated a lot of discussion.
“We’re excited that we
received these awards and that
this notoriety has come to us.”
The sea lions themselves are
finally migrating to their per-
manent homes. This spring,
Shippin’ Shack is producing a
walking map of at least 12 of
the sea lions remaining in the
Florence area. Some of the sea
lions have been purchased pri-
vately, but many of them are
still available for public view-
ing. New plaques detailing the
project will be installed this
summer.
The very last sea lion went to
its newest owners during the
Florence Rotary Auction on
March 11. “Heceta Takes
Flight” artist Julie Larson
donated her sea lion to benefit
Florence Rotary Club and its
many
youth
programs.
PeaceHealth Peace Harbor
Medical Center caregivers won
the bid.
“Rotary funds go to scholar-
ships,” Connor said. “That
means some student in our area
will receive a scholarship from
that funding.”
The deadline for the
Florence Rotary Club Arts
scholarship is this Friday,
March 31. Both Siuslaw and
Mapleton students may apply.

www.theflorencerotary.org.
“If that student receives a
scholarship, hopefully they
choose to come back to our
community and create public
art,” Connor said.
Ultimately, an increased
focus on the arts was her pur-
pose in creating the project.
Friends of the FEC has set
aside the money generated
from Dancing with Sea Lions
to improve sound and lighting
technology at the FEC. The
group is working with Susy
Lacer to write a grant that will
help “gain interest on the
investment that the communi-
ty gave,” Connor said.
“I’ve been really pleased
that we’ve gotten such posi-
tive support. There have been
some challenges and learning
opportunities in all of this, but
we received support from City
Hall, Florence Public Works,
West Coast Auto Body and the
community,” she said.
The Friends are looking for
a volunteer to shine and main-
tain the sea lions this spring.
“I just have to say, they’ve
all held up so well. I don’t see
any fading going on with the
paints and they all still look
shiny,” Connor said. “I think
these will be around for a long
time.”
