Salvatores named Volunteer of the Month at OCHS
F
or the first time, two volunteers
have been selected as Oregon
Coast Humane Society’s
(OCHS) Volunteer of the Month.
Robert and Nancy Salvatore, Yachats
area residents, have been driving to the
OCHS animal shelter on an almost
daily basis for more than a year so that
they can ensure that they can give as
many dogs as possible an opportunity
to be outdoors for a walk or play date.
Nancy and Rob are often seen on the
beach playing with, walking or running
happy dogs. They share a deep person-
al dedication to helping the dogs to be
both physically and psychologically fit
by getting them out of the shelter for a
break in the monotony of otherwise
long days in their kennel pens.
There is a great shortage of volun-
teer dog walkers which is why Nancy
and Rob make the trek from Yachats as
many times a week as they do to walk
the dogs.
While they are walking the dogs,
Rob and Nancy encourage those they
meet to consider becoming a dog walk-
er too and in doing so “making the
day” for another dog. There are 17
dogs now waiting for their forever
homes. Those dogs spend much of
their days with little to look forward to
and days are longer if they don’t have
the opportunity for a walk.
As Nancy is quick to add, its “great
exercise for both the dogs and the
walker.” Currently, with 17 dogs in the
care of OCHS, there is a great need for
more volunteers to walk these wonder-
ful dogs and brighten their days.
as many dogs as they could.
Nancy said that they “fell in
love with dogs while there.”
Before long, Nancy began pho-
tographing the dogs during their
long walks on the beach and dur-
ing what they call “play dates.”
She also began posting pictures of
the dogs on Facebook, hoping to
find them good homes. After a
while, a German organization
noticed their pictures and also
became involved with the very
small grassroots organization.
With that, soon the numbers of
adoptions continued to grow. A
few years later, more than 600
dogs have been adopted into
homes throughout the European
Union. All this began with one
