BARRETT—Julie Barrett,
who was a long-time resident
of Florence,
passed away
unexpected-
ly Feb. 23,
from com-
plications of
surgery.
Julie was
diagnosed
Julie Barrett with throat
cancer
in
2014.
She had surgery to remove
the cancer the end of January.
She fought hard and was in
remission when she passed
away.
She is survived by her
mother; five older siblings; her
partner of more than 10 years;
three
children:
Jennifer
Barrett-Neet, Stefanie Barrett-
Dean and Kevin Hoyt.
She most enjoyed spending
the last five years in the com-
pany of her five grandchildren,
whom she shares with her ex-
husband, Doug Barrett.
She was taken way to soon
and will be forever missed.
A service will be held for
her Friday, March 24, at the
meeting Yurt at West Woahink
State Park, at 2 p.m.
Siuslaw Public Library soon
to be tobacco free zone
The Siuslaw Public Library
District Board recently voted
to designate the Florence cam-
pus of the Library District a
smoke and tobacco free cam-
pus.
The act was taken at the
Board’s regular meeting held
on Wednesday, March 15, and
the new policy will take effect
April 15.
The new policy prohibits
tobacco use and smoking in all
forms in or on property owned
by the Library District.
Devices utilized for the use or
smoking of tobacco are also
included in the prohibition.
These include electronic
cigarettes, inhalant delivery
systems,smoke-free
oral
tobacco use, cigarillos, cigars,
pipes, hookahs, and any other
preparation or delivery method
of tobacco.
The new policy applies to
employees, patrons, and all
other visitors.
Tobacco use or smoking
will be allowed in enclosed
vehicles parked more than 25
feet away from any entrance or
air intake vent.

Florence Municipal Court
March 21
Nickolus McKane Ough
pleaded guilty to failure to
carry or present a valid
license. He was sentenced to
four days in Florence City Jail.
He must pay $525 in fines.
Chelsie Marie Kelley plead-
ed no contest to criminal tres-
pass. She was sentenced to
four days in Florence City Jail.
She must pay $375 in fines
and not contact or be in or
about the residence or place of
SVFR recieves improved
protection class rating
Siuslaw Valley Fire and
Rescue is pleased to announce
that they have received an
improved insurance protection
class rating from the Insurance
Service Office (ISO).
ISO is an organization that
provides information on fire
loss risk to insurance compa-
nies. Insurance companies use
ISO ratings to determine prop-
erty insurance rates.
The previous rating was a
5/10 rating and the new rating
is a 4/10.

stop; however, the driver
failed to yeild.
The deputy pursued the
vehicle at varying speeds aver-
aging 45-55 miles per hour.
The driver of the stolen vehi-
cle eventually stopped when
she encountered downed trees
on a gravel road and was
unable to go any further.
The deputy was able to take
the suspect, 48-year-old
Pruett, into custody without
incident.
Pruett was lodged at the
Douglas County Jail on
charges of unauthorized use of
a motor vehicle and attempting
to elude police in a vehicle.

County Sheriff’s Office and
Reedsport Police Department.

ISO also includes a sub-cate-
gory rating that includes prop-
erties within five to seven road
miles of a fire station and a
credible water source.
Chief Langborg recom-
mends that fire district proper-
ty owners contact their insur-
ance companies to determine
if these improved ratings could
lower their property insurance
rates.

Office arrested Bobbie Pruett,
a Florence-
area tran-
sient, on
Thursday
after a pur-
suit involv-
ing a stolen
vehicle.

on March
23, a deputy in the Reedsport
area overheard Oregon State
Police looking for a stolen sil-
ver Volvo from the Lane
County area. A short time later,
the deputy spotted the vehicle
on Lower Smith River Road
near mile marker 7.
The deputy confirmed the
vehicle was stolen and
attempted to make a traffic

Benjamin Von Fisk pleaded
guilty to harassment. He was
sentenced to two days in
Florence City Jail and must
report to treatment. He must
pay $625 in fines and not con-
tact or be in or about the resi-
dence or place of employment
of the victim.
Lori Lynette Reseigne
pleaded no contest to improper
use of dialing 911. She must
pay $450 in fines and report to
treatment.
