prizes following this year’s
event.
First place went to Karen
Brown for her “Love Gone
Wrong on Harris Street,”
which earned her $100. Paul
Klippel took second place with
his original poem, “My Beating
Heart,” with third place going
to Katie Brauns with her origi-
nal poem titled “Unbroken.”

FRAA offers ‘Memoir’
writing workshop
Every life contains invalu-
able lessons, profound wis-
dom, amazing courage and
rich humor. Capturing these
experiences on paper helps
people to understand their
deeper meaning so others can
benefit from them.
“Memoir Writing: From
Real Life to Real Story” will
take place on Saturday, March
18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at
the Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA), 120 Maple
St. in Old Town.
Presented by “Writers on
the River,” the class will show
writers of all levels how to
turn their precious memories
and unique life events into
compelling stories that can
inspire and entertain readers,
or simply leave a legacy of
love and wisdom for family
and friends.
The class will be taught by
Catherine J. Rourke, an award-
winning writer, author, jour-
nalist and columnist with more
than 30 years’ staff experience
at daily newspapers, national
magazines and major publish-
ers. Educated at the City
University of New York,
Oxford University and the
Walter Cronkite School of
Journalism, she has served as a
contractual book editor for
Amazon and Random House,
in both print and digital for-
mats.
The former New Yorker
now resides in Florence where
she is writing a memoir about
her adventures as an inves-
tigative reporter titled “And
Forgive Us Our Press Passes.”
“Writers on the River”
offers monthly classes at
FRAA to help writers of all
levels enrich their craft. As a
literary support group open to
all aspiring and experienced
writers, it provides conversa-
tion, mentorship, education
and literary events in an
inspiring atmosphere.
Workshops fill up quickly,
so pre-registration is required.
