Garden Club seeks
scholarship applicants
The Florence Garden Club
invites local Siuslaw and
Mapleton High School seniors
to apply for the Garden Club
scholarship for the 2016-17
school year. Applicants must
be planning a post-high school
career in horticulture or a
related field such as forestry or
environmental science.
Awards are typically $1,000
or more.
Applications are available
through each high school
counseling department.
Deadline for applying is
Saturday, April 1.
Since the first scholarship
was awarded in 1994, over
$53,000 has been distributed
to local students.
The Garden Club raises
funds throughout the year
from donations, raffles and the
spring community plant sale.
“We gratefully thank the
Florence and Mapleton area
merchants who have con-
tributed merchandise and serv-
ices for raffles, as well as mon-
etary donations to the club for
scholarship fund raising,” said
Scholarship Chairman Carol
Jolley.
The Florence Garden Club
was formed in 1949 to
improve the community and to
promote the knowledge of hor-
ticulture. The club meets the
second Wednesday of each
month, at 1 p.m., at the
Presbyterian
Church
on
Highway 101 in Florence.
The club currently has more
than 90 members.
For more information
regarding the scholarship
application process, contact a
school counselor, or call Carol

Celebrate Women’s
History Month
Every March we celebrate
women’s history month across
the United States, the United
Kingdom, and Australia, corre-
sponding with International
Women’s Day on March 8. The
celebration highlights the con-
tributions of women to events in
history and contemporary socie-
ty. The library has a display of
books and other materials relat-
ed to women’s history in the
center of the reference area that
will be up throughout the
month.

This will be a fast-paced
review of the year’s best books
in 60-minutes, with a booklist
of the reviewed titles available.
A sneak preview: among the
top books this past year are

Moriarity and “White Trash” by
Nancy Isenberg. Hopefully all
those who attend will get some
ideas about wonderful new
books to explore.
Fish Tales: Traditions and
Challenges of Seafood in
Oregon
The library is pleased to pres-
ent an Oregon Humanities
Conversation Project program
on Wed., March 15, at 1 p.m., in
the Bromley Room, featuring
Jennifer Burns Bright dis-
cussing Fish Tales: Traditions
and Challenges of Seafood in
Oregon.
Oregonians love the wild
beauty of our 363 miles of
coastline but finding truly local
seafood can be hard, even on
the coast.
The U.S. imports approxi-
mately 90 percent of its seafood
and ships out nearly as much to
the global market. Why aren’t
we eating more local seafood?
Why do we consider seafood
more a delicacy now than in the
past?
In this conversation, food
writer Jennifer Burns Bright
helps participants explore our
relationship with the products of
the sea and culture traditions
involving fishing, eating
seafood and understanding the
ocean’s bounty and challenges.
Bright is a food and travel
writer based in Port Orford. She
recently retired from teaching at
the University of Oregon, and
