Beneath rainy skies, the
Mapleton track and field
team spent the past week
gearing up for its first meet
of the season next week at
Waldport, where the Lady
Sailors hope to launch a run
to defend their Mountain
West League title this May.
Meanwhile, the boys
team is poised with several
state returners who hope to
use that experience to land
the first boys’ district title
in more than a decade.
The trout stocking
schedule for 2017 is avail-
able online and trout have
been stocked in some
lakes. Fishing for the vari-
ous warm water fish
species will slow as water
temperatures cool. There
are numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.
“Our teams are pretty
deep with talent this year,”
said Mapleton coach Aaron
Longo. “Our girls’ team
numbers are a little low, but
we’re talent-rich with a lot
of athletes who have the
potential to score in the top
two or three at district this
year.
“And our boys’ team is
hungry for a title.”

OSAA offers latest redistricting plan
B Y N ED H ICKSON
Siuslaw News
The Oregon School Activities
Association (OSAA) offered its latest
redistricting proposals last week, zero-
ing in on what will be a final decision
slated for March 20.
The OSAA’s latest recommendation
includes four possible scenarios, or as
many as five if it goes with the foot-
ball-only option — but it’s highly
Nehalem Hatchery
released 200 surplus winter
steelhead into Vernonia
pond, 57 into Lost Lake
and 60 into Lake Lytle.
These fish get fairly active
in the lake and offer a
unique fishing experience,
especially when the rivers
are blown out. Once in the
lake they are considered
“trout” and do not require a
Combined Angling Tag.
Anglers are reminded,
however, that only one
trout per day over 20 inch-
es may be retained, and
these fish will almost all be
in that size range.
Trout stocking is com-
plete in the other North
Coast lakes, but there are
still hold over trout avail-
able and winter can be a
great time to fish for them
as these trout will be larger
now, and getting hungry.
The trout stocking sched-
ule for 2017 is available
online, and printed ver-
sions will be out soon.
Chinook, steelhead
The Siuslaw River and
Lake Cr. are open for
hatchery winter steelhead.
Fishing is slow. Casting
spinners, drifting bait or
using a bobber and jig can
be effective.

unlikely that option will gain traction.
In the meantime, the OSAA has pre-
sented options 10, 11, 12 and 13, with
the first two options moving toward a
six-classification model, and the last
two options requiring a five-classifica-
tion structure.
Under the six-classification propos-
al, Siuslaw would be a part of the
revised Far West League; the five-clas-
sification system would move the
Vikings into a newly revised Sky-Em
League model.
Draft 10 would include Bandon,
Coquille, Rogue River, South Umpqua,
Siuslaw and Sutherlin. Draft 11 would
expand the Far West to eight teams,
including Brookings-Harbor, Cottage
Grove, Creswell, Douglas, Elmira,
South Umpqua, Sutherlin and Siuslaw.
In the Draft 12 option, Siuslaw
would join Cottage Grove, Elmira,
