A MONTHLY COLUMN OF RECYCLING
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY F LORENCE
M ASTER R ECYCLERS
For the Siuslaw News
(A monthly column of recycling
information provided by Florence
Master Recyclers)
Q. I hate just throwing something
away, if it can be fixed instead. But
where can I find someone who knows
how to repair a watch, or a vacuum
cleaner, or my favorite pair of shoes?
A. Thank you for asking! In
answer to just this question, a few
years ago Lane County Waste
Management and Master Recycler
volunteers created a local repair
resource guide for Lane County.
Visit www.Repair2Reuse.org for a
directory of common items that can
be repaired and where to find a serv-
ice provider for those repairs. While
many of the listed providers are locat-
ed in the Eugene area, several are list-
ed in Florence.
Community members are invited
and encouraged to add to the list of
available repair providers and shops.
Repairing broken items, instead of
throwing them in the trash and buy-
ing new, saves both money and
resources.
As an added economic benefit,
local, sustainable jobs are maintained
by supporting these repair businesses.
Q. I want to do more recycling, I
just don’t have time. What can I do in
my very limited time available?
A. The biggest bang for your buck
is to Reduce, the first and most
important of the popular 3Rs. Here
are four simple ideas that can have a
significant impact:
• Keep a reusable mug in your car
for that morning mocha stop; many
coffee shops offer a discount if you
bring your own cup.
• Still collecting plastic bags when
you go to the store? Carry a few
reusable bags in the car so you
always have them on hand. Or try one
of the bags that stuffs into its own
pouch and clips to a belt or pack.
• Use cloth napkins and towels
instead of disposable paper ones;
nearly one-fifth of material disposed
as trash in Oregon is paper and card-
board.
• BYOB-bring your own water
bottle; there are endless choices for
reusable water bottles these days,
find one for every member of the
family.
Q. When does the city take yard
debris?
A. That program has just re-
opened for the season. The first 2017
Yard Debris Disposal Day will be
Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. In general, it is the third
Saturday from March through
October — May is held on the second
Saturday to accommodate Rhody
Day festivities.
Costs for disposal start at $10 for a
pickup load; cash payments are
required.
To participate in this program, go
to the Kingwood Street entrance of
the Florence Airport, at Kingwood
and 27th streets. This is a great place
to recycle brush, leaves, weeds, grass
clippings, and winter prunings.
Please do not bring: food waste,
construction debris, animal waste,
plastics, household or hazardous
waste.
The City recycles yard debris to
make their popular FloGro soil
amendment. For more information,
visit www.ci.Florence.or.us/Public
Works.
Yard and construction debris may
also be taken to the Florence Transfer
Station at 2820 North Rhododendron
Drive year ‘round for recycling. They
are open Monday through Saturday, 8
a.m. to 6 p.m.
Costs start at $12 for less than 1
cubic yard.
In the yard debris recycling pro-
gram, they welcome grass clippings,
tree limbs under 12 inches in diame-
ter, bush prunings, and leaves; please,
no lumber, poison oak, dirt, rocks,
sod, root wads or stumps.
For wood waste/construction
debris, they accept most solid wood,
lumber, plywood, pressboard, parti-
