Backyard burning season
opens this week.
Lane Regional Air Protec-
tion Agency’s backyard burn-
ing advisory program will con-
tinue through June 15 in cer-
tain areas of the county.
LRAPA regulates burning
conducted outdoors in open
areas, burn barrels, and other
make-shift devices from
March 1 to June 15.
Open burning is prohibited
inside the city limits of Eugene
and Florence.
This also applies to lots
under 0.5 acres inside Spring-
field city limits and Eugene
Urban Growth Boundary.
Separately, the agency’s
home wood heating advisory
season will continue until May
31.
LRAPA will continue to
issue daily advisories for the
use of wood stoves and fire-
places, these advisories will
contine through June 15.
On Feb. 25, the Florence
Community PTA presented
the opportunity for Florence
area adults, students and their
parents, to go “Around the
World in a Day.”
Promoted as a multi-cultur-
al celebration, the event was
held at the Siuslaw Middle
School
gymnasium
and
attracted nearly 200 attendees.
The multi-cultural gather-
ing was created with the goal
of sharing the culture and
interests of a wide variety of
ethnic groups with the com-
munity.
The festivities included
musical performances, cui-
sine, dancing and hands-on
workshops for young and old
alike.
The event was presented by
the Florence PTA and was
coordinated by event chair-
person Diane McCalmont.
“Our goal is to bring stu-
dents,parents and community
members togeather to provide
education on cultures from
around the world, while build-
ing social connections within
the schools and our communi-
ty,”
McCalmont
said.
“Through food, music, arts
and dance we hope to intro-

This year’s Florence Rotary
Club Auction, March 11, will
be offering the experience of a
lifetime as one of its auction
items. Donated by Dr. Brian
Holmes and Tammy Holmes,
the experience includes a one
week trip to Otavalo Ecuador,
South America. However, this
experience offers something
priceless: literally helping to
bring smiles to hundreds of

Holmes’ have made it their
mission to assist in providing
free dental and health care for
the children of Ecuador. The

where the presenters were
located and where there was
ethnically themed food for all
to enjoy.

on activities. These included
Native American beading,
origami and Scandanavian
dance.
