PTA hosts multi-cultural
event at middle school
Florence Community PTA
is extending an invitation for
Siuslaw students, parents and
community members to join
them and go “Around the
World in a Day” during the
PTA’s first multi-cultural
event. The free event will take
place on Saturday Feb. 25
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
Siuslaw Middle School and is
open to the public.
“Our goal is to bring stu-
dents, parents and community
members together to provide
education on cultures from
around the world while build-
ing social connections with the
schools and our community,”
said event chair, Diane
McCalmont. “Through food,
music, arts and dance we hope
to introduce our community to
the world and cultures that lie
beyond our coast — and have
fun while doing it.”
The event will feature finger
foods from Mexican, Asian,
German,
Italian
and
Americana-style cuisines as
well as a variety of entertain-
ment including belly dancers,
Native Education drum and
dancers and Tribal flutist
Nathalie Picard.
Artistic demonstrations and
displays will cover basket
weaving, beading, origami,
Scandinavian and belly dance
instruction and much more.
For more information, visit
the Florence Community PTA
on Facebook or call Diane
McCalmont at 541-999-9692.

21st annual Home and Garden Show brings out new treats
There will be a few new
twists when the 21st annual
Florence Home and Garden
Show opens at the Florence
Events Center on March 3.
Those twists include tiny
homes, tractors and fairy gar-
dens.
“This could be the best show
we’ve ever had,” said promoter
Jon Thompson.
That’s because outside a dis-
play by Tiny SMART Homes
of Albany will show off the
finer points of living small.
Alongside the tiny homes will
be the nearly 100 percent recy-
cled greenhouse from window
purveyor Mark and Company,
and a wide selection of lawn
and garden tractors from Mid
Valley Tractor.
Tiny homes can range in size
from just under 100 square feet
to a palatial 350 square feet,
and the models produced by
SMART also include sustain-
able and eco-friendly features
without having to give up com-
fort.
Marcelle Fisher, with Forbes
Magazine, said “compact-
home living can still be just
grand,” adding they can be
“simple, more affordable and
ecologically friendly.”
Mark Seery of Mark and
Company will have a display
of affordable and energy reduc-
ing windows inside, but outside
will be what he likes to call
“garden art”.
Seery and his crew began
assembling wood and glass
greenhouses from old windows
they were taking out of homes
and businesses. The greenhous-
es are functional, but also
extremely attractive.
Alongside the tiny home and
the greenhouse, there is a wide
