Huff, currently ranked No. 1
in 4A wrestling’s 113-pound
division, will be on the mats
at
Veterans
Memorial
Coliseum this weekend for a
chance at the state title.
Huff will open the tourna-
ment by taking on fellow Far
West League wrestler Colton
West of Marshfield.
Along with Huff, the
Vikings will have three other
grapplers on the mats, includ-
ing

Among those who will be
competing at this year’s state
bowling tournament will be
both Viking varsity bowling
teams, on the lanes in
Portland Feb. 25 and 26.
The varsity boys team,
coached by Kathy Anderson,
is sending a team familiar
with the state environment,
with most of its team return-
ing from last season’s state-
tournament lineup.
The boys roster includes
Patrick Hill, Cesar Castillo,
Kainunn Harrison, Logan
Lindner, Evan Johnson and
Neil DeVera.

he Viking boys basketball team
came into Friday’s final Far
West League match-up in hopes
of upsetting undefeated rival and
league champion North Bend for sever-
al reasons — not the least of which was
to secure the league’s No. 2 spot head-
ing into the state play-in game.
To do so would mean the first post-
season appearance by the Vikings in
nearly a decade.
In addition, it was also Senior Night,
and potentially the last game on the
home hardwood for seniors Brogan
Cornish and Marcos Reyna-Ayala.
Plus, handing the Bulldogs (10-0)
their first loss of the season would be
an added bonus.

The Lady Vikings got to end their
Far West League season at home last
Friday while, at the same time, allow-
ing its four seniors to take a bow during
their last appearance on Siuslaw’s hard-
wood.
Destinie Tatum, Abby Watkins,
Nikki Launius and Claire Waggoner
were each recognized before the tipoff.
North Bend, which was already assured
of a state play-in game after clinching
third place earlier that week, turned in a

The Mapleton boys bas-
ketball team was on the road
Saturday, battling for a
chance to advance to the state
playoffs for the first time in
nearly a decade.
The Sailors took on Lowell
at Northwestern Christian
University, where their road
to state ended in a 45-20 loss
to the Red Devils.
