DRIVER ED
Dignity
from 1A
During this stage of his
illness, pain, grief, anger
and depression are a con-
stant presence in his life.
One of the conditions
associated with Parkinson’s
is dementia. The ODDA
requires that the individual
applying for the fatal
medications be of sound
mind, which is a subjective
term. It also requires that
the individual have a con-
firmed diagnosis of a termi-
nal condition which will
lead to death within six
months.
Neither of these require-
ments may be possible in
Yelle’s circumstance.
His unusual combination
of symptoms are destroying
his body and mind at differ-
ent rates. And even though
his long-term prognosis is
indeed terminal, he may not
ever be able to declare that
he has only six months to
live, as required by the
ODDA.
This leaves Yelle in
limbo, not knowing when
his physical condition will
degenerate to the point he
no longer wishes to live —
while at the same time
being uncertain when his
flight instructor, an aviation
consultant and a recreational
flyer. And while their paths to
ownership of the Stearman
were different, both men
believe their appreciation of
the plane drew them together.
They point to the beauty
and durability of the plane as
one of the main reasons the
plane still draws attention.
“Having gotten to know the
airplane over the last year or
so, it is such a classic piece of
aviation and in such amazing
condition that I was pleased to
have the opportunity to buy it
from Sam,” Terry said. “Not
just for Winette and myself,
but for all the people who will
get to look at the Oregon coast
from the air.”
The Stearman is not only a
beautiful plane to look at, but it
also holds a prestigious place
in aviation history. The
Stearman series were the pri-
mary planes used to train pilots
from the U.S. Navy and Air
Force prior to World War II.
There were more than
10,000 in use during this time,
but after the war they were
considered obsolete and thou-

mental state will be consid-
ered too “unsound” to make
his final decision under
ODDA requirements.
Beyond that, Yelle wor-
ries that his mental condi-
tion will be so diminished at
some point in his life that he
will not be aware or cog-
nizant enough to express his
desire to die.
This is the unintended
quandary that Yelle and
other Oregonians with
unique illnesses and unusu-
al circumstances face each
year. While the ODDA was
created to provide a certain
level of dignity for those
whose lives are coming to a
painful or distressing end, it
also includes unforeseen
gaps Oregonians can fall
through.
Part II in this three-part
series will continue next
Wednesday, Feb. 22, with a
look at Yelle’s efforts to
change existing legislation,
as well as perspectives from

sands were sold to the public.
The Stearmans were easily
converted to commercial use
with minor adaptations and
they became a valued element
of farm life across America.
Most were used as crop
dusters.
That was until Director
Alfred Hitchcock used one to
chase Cary Grant through a
cornfield in his film, “North
by Northwest.”
Hitchcock reportedly used
the plane because of its dis-
tinctive paint job, classic
design and its recognizability
among the public.
This high profile turn on the
big screen sparked renewed
interest in the Stearman and
led to the plane becoming a
collector’s item.
The new owners of the Aero
Legends Stearman plan to
continue offering coastal tours
and look forward to expanding
the ways in which they can
share the Stearman with the
residents of Florence.
