Book Review
“The Wonder” by Emma
Donoghue
Emma Donoghue, the author
of the acclaimed “Room”,
which later was made into a
movie, this year published a
new novel, The Wonder. In this
book, Lib Wright, a young
English nurse trained by the
legendary Florence Nightingale,
arrives in an impoverished Irish
village with a strange mission.
11 year-old Anna O’Donnell is
said to have eaten nothing for
four months.
With tourists thronging to see
the child, and the press sowing
doubt, the baffled community
looks to an outsider to bring the
truth to light. Lib’s job is sim-
ple: stay in the girl’s bare room
at all hours, watching her.
An educated skeptic repelled by
what she sees as ignorance and
superstition, Lib expects to
expose the fast as a hoax within
days.
But the long hours she spends
with Anna begin to erode all her
assumptions about the child, the
Irish, and herself.
Is Anna a fraud or a “living
wonder”? Or is something more
sinister unfolding right before
Lib’s eyes?
Haunting, sparse and written
with all the propulsive tension

In the Feb. 11, issue of the

incorrect. The first workshop
was held on Feb.14 and the
second of Landau’s work-
shops is Feb.16 at LCC from

Read the book - or at least
make an honest and fair attempt
at doing so - then return the
book with a “blind date” evalu-
ation form. The forms, besides
being used to recommend new
and wonderful books to readers,
will also be used for prize draw-
ings.
The point is to take a risk and
expand your reading interests.
Sound fun? Be sure to try it
out!
Reporting Damaged Materials
If you notice that a book is
damaged once you’ve begun to
read it or if you’re listening to
an audiobook and a disc won’t
play or you’re watching a DVD
that is having problems, be sure
to let library staff know when
you return the item.
We can’t fix the problem unless
we know about it. It also helps
us to determine if it’s a problem
with a particular supplier or just
with that one item.
And our volunteer repairmen
are wizards at repairing dam-
aged books, DVDs, and CDs!
So, don’t hesitate to let us know
if there is a problem with any
materials you check out.
