OBITUARIES
TUNICK—Joy Tunick —
1926-2017.
Joy was born in San Mateo,
Calif., and spent her childhood
there.
In
1960,
Joy
and her hus-
band, Peter
Slimmer,
with children
Mark
and
Jan, moved
to the Fiji
Islands
to
Joy Tunick
start several
hotels. Joy managed the land-
scaping, while Peter managed
the hotels.
It was there she began to
paint. Joy’s colorful abstracts
were inspired by the beauty of
Fiji.
She later moved to Australia,
then Honolulu, eventually set-
tling back in San Mateo, Calif.
There, she met and married
Walter Tunick in 1984.
Joy and Walter spent some
years travelling, and eventually
moved to Florence in 2001. Joy
and Walter are long-time mem-
bers of the Florence Baha’i
community.
Joy is survived by her hus-
band, Walter; her children:
Mark and Jan; daughter-in-law
Caroline; Dena and her grand-
children: Justin and James,
Danielle, Marion and Trae.
Joy will be greatly missed.
She was a loving mother and
wife, and a caring, loyal friend
to many she loved.
A funeral service will be
held Monday, Feb. 20, at
Burns’s Riverside Chapel
Florence Funeral Home, begin-
ning at 2:30 p.m.
There will be private inter-
ment at Willamette National
Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Frances
Bond, 77, formerly of
Florence,

Gary was
born
to
Floyd and
Ruth Bond
in Everett,
Wash., on
Gary Bond
March 11,
1940, in Eagle, Idaho. When
Gary was 13, he moved to
Florence with his parents and
attended Siuslaw High School.
He then joined the U.S. Army
and served his country, receiv-
ing a Medal of Good Conduct.
He was honorably dis-
charged in 1962 and returned to
Florence, where he soon met
the love of his life, Sherry
Wilkinson. Gary and Sherry
were married in Reno, Nev., on
May 25, 1963, and they had
two children: Gary Bond Jr.,
who resides in Boise, Idaho,
and Brenda Garber (Richard)
of Eagle, Idaho.
Gary is survived by his
brothers: Bill Hanstad (Anna)
of Roseburg, Lonnie “Cork”
Kief (Conni) of Florence,
Floyd “Buck” Bond (Andria)
of Albany; and sister Sandra
Bernhardt (Phil) of White City,
Ore.
Gary was preceded in death
by his wife, Sherry, in May
2015; his brother, Bob Bond
(Wanda); and his sister, Diane

Gary lived his adult life and
raised his family in Florence,
where he worked in the logging
industry for many years at U.S.
Plywood, then at Champion
Int’l.
He later worked for Coast
Road Construction and retired
from
County
Transfer
Recycling in 2002. Gary loved
hunting and fishing trips with
his brothers and camping along
the Oregon Coast with his fam-
ily and grandkids.
He held his two grandsons
Jacob and Jordan Rainwater
close to his heart. He loved to
cheer them on at their football,
basketball and baseball games
at Siuslaw and could always be
found walking the sidelines or
sitting in the stands at their
games.
He also enjoyed socializing
and playing pool with friends
at the Florence Elks Lodge
where he was a longtime mem-
ber. Gary and Sherry were
members of the Florence
Church of the Nazarene. Gary
will always be remembered for
his kind heart, contagious smile
and love for his family.
A memorial service will be
held Saturday, March 11, at 1
p.m., at Crossroads Assembly
of God Church in Florence.
Gary will be laid to rest at
Pacific Sunset Cemetery next
to his loving wife, Sherry.

passed away Feb. 6, 2017.

contest to theft. He was sen-
