“An Irish County Love
Story” by Patrick Taylor
It’s the winter of 1967,
and snow is on the ground
in the colorful Irish village
of Ballybucklebo, but the
chilly weather can’t stop
love from warming hearts
all over the country.
Not just the love between
a man and woman, as with
young doctor Barry Laverty
and his fiancée, Sue Nolan,
who are making plans to
start a new life together, but
also the love of an ailing
pensioner for a faithful dog
that’s gone missing.
Or the love of the local
gentry for the great estate
they are on the verge of los-
ing, or Doctor Fingal
Flahertie O’Reilly’s deep
and abiding love for his
longtime home.
For decades, ever since
the war, Number One Main
Street, Ballybucklebo, has
housed O’Reilly and his
practice.
In recent years, its doors
have been open to
O’Reilly’s wife, Kitty,
Barry Laverty, and a new
addition to the practice,
Doctor Nonie Stevenson.
It is to Number One that
patients young and old
come when they need a
doctor’s care, for every-
thing from the measles to a
rare and baffling blood dis-
ease.
An unexpected turn of
events threatens to drive
O’Reilly from his home for
good, unless the entire vil-
lage can rally behind their
doctor and prove that love
really can conquer all.
“An Irish Country Love
Story” is Patrick Taylor’s
twelfth book in the very
popular and heartwarming
Irish Country series, with
the first book being An
Irish Country Doctor, pub-
lished in 2007.
Brought up in Northern
Ireland, Taylor trained as a
physician and medical
researcher, and is a professor
emeritus at the University of
British Columbia. He now
lives on Saltspring Island in
B.C.

used to recommend new

Blind Date with a Book
Are you ready to take
part in the library’s 4th
annual Blind Date with a
Book program? For the
adventurous reader this pro-
gram offers the opportunity
to let fate take a hand in
selecting what you read.
The program works like
this. Select a plainly
wrapped book from a selec-
tion of books at the library.
Read the book — or at
least make an honest and
fair attempt at doing so —
then return the book with a
“blind date” evaluation
form.
AARP Tax Service
AARP has begun their
free tax preparation service
at the library. The service
will be available on
Mondays and Thursdays,
from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Assistance will also be
available on Saturday, April
15 (this year’s tax due date
has been extended until
Tuesday, April 18).
AARP requests that you
bring your 2015 tax return,
a photo ID, Social Security
card and 2016 tax docu-
ments and medical coverage
documents. AARP offers
9 A
free tax preparation help to
residents of all ages, but
especially if you are 50 or
older and can’t afford paid
tax preparation.
