Oregon State Police identify
man who died on Highway 126
On Jan. 31, at about
1:25pm, Oregon State Police
Troopers (OSP) were dis-
patched to a report of a male
jumping in and out of traffic
on Highway 126 near milepost
11, 3 miles west of Mapleton
in Lane County.
While responding to the
call, a report came in of a
pedestrian being struck by a
vehicle in the same area.
Once on scene, OSP deter-
mined the pedestrian had died
as a result of his injuries. The
description of the pedestrian
kill matched the calls received
541-997-7121 opbc.com
earlier.
On Feb. 1, an investigative
team was able to determine the
identity of the male as 48-
year-old Michael Joseph
Griffis, of the Florence area.
The operator of the 2015
Dodge commercial van, 34-
year-old Kaley Hewitt, of
Independence, Ore., was not
injured and is cooperating with
the investigation. OSP was
assisted by Western Lane
Ambulance District, Siuslaw
Valley Fire and Rescue and
Oregon
Department
of
Transportation.

Most people have heard of the
3Rs of environmentally
friendly behavior-
REDUCE is to use less of something.
Use less water, turn off lights,
use both sides of a paper.
REUSE is to use an item again. Refi ll a water bottle, reuse a
container and buy reusable bags.
RECYCLE is to make new items from old ones; recycle
bottles, glass, paper, cans, plastic, cardboard & more.
T ip
In winter cleaning, use the least-hazardous
product to do the job; assess your needs and
read the labels.
Especially in winter months, your house is
closed more airtight. Toxic products can
concentrate fumes in the air you breathe
and harm your health. Young children can be
especially vulnerable to these effects. Water
down your drain also carries residues from your
home, and many harsh household chemicals
are not removed by sewage-treatment or
septic systems. These waters later empty to
underground water and rivers.
