The Hoedads Restoration
Cooperative (HRC) was start-
ed by Jerry Rust (later a Lane
County Commissioner) and
John Sundquist.
The hoedad is a hand tool
that is used to plant bare-root
trees on steep slopes. HRC
met success in applying the
cooperative model to tree
planting. The HRC was active
throughout the Northwest
from 1971 to 1994.
Many of their workers had
college degrees and were
known for environmentalism,
feminism and alternative eco-
nomics.
The SWC supports sound
economic, social, and environ-
mental uses of natural and
human resources in the
Siuslaw River Basin.

cooperation among public and
private entities to promote
awareness and understanding
of watershed functions by
adopting and implementing a
total watershed approach to
natural resource management
and production.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb.
5, the women of the Florence
United Methodist Church will
take a stand against human
trafficking along with other
United Methodist Women
from around the United States.
These women will stack
boxes to symbolize intercept-
ing traffickers and to represent
a commitment to stand with
victims of human trafficking.
In football, the phrase “stack
the box” is used when the
defense puts its players “in the
box,” in a rectangular forma-
tion, to stop the offensive
team’s rush.
“Human traffickers run a
game on the vulnerable,” said
Cynthia Orr of the Methodist
Church. “Our goal is to stack
the box against them, to inter-
cept their game and to box
them up for prosecution.”
The Super Bowl draws some
of the largest numbers of traf-
fickers who coerce the vulnera-
ble to work in food service,
cleaning services, escort serv-
ices and as sex workers.
This act will serve to raise
awareness of the increasing
number of people who, not of
their own free will, are forced
into labor.
