Of the four Far West League teams
on the mats during Saturday’s 21-team
Nick Lutz Memorial Invitational, the
Vikings placed first, and sixth overall.
“It is one of our biggest meets in
terms of the number of teams that par-
ticipated,” Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik
said on Saturday, “and our wrestlers are
really battling well.”
Leading that battle were Richard
Huff (120 lbs.), Scott Simmons (138
lbs.), Kainan Lane (285 lbs.), and Nick
Steinman (170 lbs), each of whom
placed at the invitational, which includ-
ed teams ranging in size from Sheldon
to Triangle Lake.
Huff improved to 19-3 for the season
after going undefeated at 3-0, pinning
his way past Jaeson Jones of Sutherlin,
Ezra Haddy of Junction City and

rebounds against South Umpqua.
Siuslaw News
It took a while for the Lady Viks to
gain momentum against visiting South
Umpqua last Friday night, but once
they did there was no stopping them.
“The first half wasn’t our best
game,” said Siuslaw coach Clint Tatum.
“But we came out strong and doubled
down on their big girls in the second
half — and we were able to run what
we wanted to.”
Siuslaw switched up its defense from
a Diamond-and-1 to a 2-1-2 zone, forc-
ing the Lancers to the perimeter. This
gave the Lady Viks more opportunities
off the glass and a chance to run quick
transitions. The result was an explosive
second half, particularly for senior
Destinie Tatum, who lead scoring with
19 points on the night, along with 6
rebounds. She went 7-for-13 from the
field and was 5-for-5 from the charity

Siuslaw boys basketball coach Dylan
Perry said he spent the week talking
about the importance of remaining
focused, particularly in close games.
On Friday night, the Vikings walked

the talk by holding off a rally by South
Umpqua in a hard-fought Far West
League opener.
“We talked a lot about our need to
take care of the ball and limit our
turnovers so we can execute our game,”
said Perry. “We ended up playing our
best game of the season.”

Siuslaw’s performance held the
Lancers to just 32 points, the lowest
score of any team the Viks have played
this season. The Viks also held South
