Shorewood Senior Living
to host Grand Open House
Shorewood Senior Living,
1451 Spruce St., will celebrate
its Grand Open House on
Thursday, Jan. 26, from 3 to 6
p.m.
A special public ribbon-cut-
ting ceremony will begin at
3:15 p.m., followed by hors
d’oeuvres, refreshments and
tours of the newly remodeled
facility.
“Shorewood Senior Living
is out to change the miscon-
ception in senior living,” said
manager Belinda Shores.
“Senior living communities
can offer a social environment
while staying independent of
care as long as possible.
“If or when you might need
some assistance, you have a
support system and team at the
ready that already know you,
your preferences and your per-
sonality – and you know
them.”
The Shorewood invites the
community to come see the
facility’s new look, enjoy food
and refreshments and learn
about services and pricing.
For more information, con-
tact Shores at 541-997-8202.

Preserving Family Recipes
By Valerie J. Frey
Heirloom dishes and family
food traditions are rich sources
of nostalgia and provide vivid
ways to learn about our fami-
lies’ past, yet preserving them
can be problematic.
Many family recipes and
food traditions are never docu-
mented in written or photo-
graphic form, existing only as
unwritten know-how and lore
that vanishes when a cook dies.
Even when recipes are writ-
ten down, they often fail to give
the tricks and tips that would
allow another cook to accurate-
ly replicate the dish.
This book, “Preserving
Family Recipes: How To Save
and Celebrate Your Food
Traditions” by Valerie J. Frey, is
a guide for gathering, adjusting,
supplementing and safely pre-
serving family recipes and for
interviewing relatives, collect-
ing oral histories, and conduct-
ing kitchen visits to document
family food traditions from the
everyday to the special occa-
sion.
It blends commonsense tips
with sound archival principles,
helping one achieve effective
results while avoiding unneces-
sary pitfalls.
Whether you simply want to
save a few accurate recipes,
help yesterday’s food ways
evolve so that they are relevant
for today’s table, or create an
extensive family cookbook,
this guidebook will help you to
savor your memories.
The author Frey is a writer,
archivist and education con-
sultant who lives in Atlanta,
Ga., but has Pacific Northwest
roots.
Family history isn’t just
about tracing ancestors, some-
times it’s about tracing food.

Finding Your Roots class
Librarian Kevin Mittge will
be offering two basic classes in
starting your family history
research. The first “Finding
Your Roots” will be on Friday,
Jan. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the

“Finding Records” will be on

The classes complement each
other but can be taken separate-
ly. The first is a general class
on how to start your family his-
tory research, while the second
will look for specifically at
what kinds of records are avail-
able, where to find them and
how to use them.
Space is limited to 10 partic-
ipants, so you must signup at
the reference desk.
