city manager. I will be committed to running the
best city operation possible so that Florence con-
tinues to be the wonderful community that we
call home; spending quality time with family
and friends; exercising more; spending time outside enjoying God’s
creation and reading a few good books along the way.”

reduces construction days for next week

Siuslaw River Bridge repairs will continue into 2019. Construction crews are cur-
rently working on Span No. 8 of the bridge, making use of a barge as a staging area.
iuslaw River Bridge is currently undergoing two upgrades:
zinc impress cathodic protection and earthquake retrofitting
that will extend its life expectancy for decades into the future. The
bridge is also being made handicap accessible.
The four-year project, scheduled for completion sometime in
2019, has run into delays caused by steel that was discovered in
the bridge’s concrete spans.

remodel turned into an
unexpected history lesson
for local realtor Pat Sapp.
“We have been renovating a proper-
ty on Harbor Street,” she said. “It’s a
major remodel, and our contractor was
working on an interior wall and came
across some posters in the wall that had
apparently been used as insulation.”
The posters were from various films
released in 1937 and 1938 and from a
traveling vaudeville show performing
at the “new” Florence theater.

Perhaps the most interesting of the
posters is from the Disney film, “Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
Originally released in 1938, Snow
White has remained one of the most
respected and honored films ever
released. The film is the first full-length
animated feature created by Disney or
any one else. The American Film
Institute has ranked “Snow White” as
the greatest American animated film of
all time in addition to being declared
one of America’s 100 greatest films.

reports this week
from readers detailing
a sighting of an unusual
lighted object visible in the
area of U.S. Coast Guard
Station Siuslaw on the
Siuslaw River.
According to Coast
Guard Petty Officer 2nd
Class Shawn Marshall,
the planet Venus is the cul-
prit.
“We received two calls
last night about this and we
walked outside and
checked it out and it’s the
planet Venus. At this time
of year and with these
atmospheric conditions it
creates just the right condi-
tions for Venus to be visi-
ble at our location,”
Marshall said Thursday.
The website EarthSky
states that Venus will be
particularly bright and visi-
ble this month for an hour
or two after sunset, depend-
ing on the viewer’s loca-
tion, and Jupiter will be
unusually visible an hour
or so before sunrise for the
next month.
