News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge - Wed. Dec. 21, 2016 Book Review by Linda Weight The library staff wish all our patrons a happy and safe holiday season! Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly Like Rise of the Rocket Girls, another book published earlier this year, Hidden Figures tells the story of women working as “human computers” in the aero- space industry. However, Hidden Figures tells an even more unique story, focusing on the black female mathematicians recruited by the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Hampton, Virginia during World War II. Not only did these women tran- scend the bias of the time against women scientists, math- ematicians and engineers, they also transcended the even more repressive bias against people of color in the sciences. Despite oppressive Jim Crow laws that had both obstructed their education, and then their careers, these exceptionally tal- ented women, who had perse- vered against many barriers to obtain advanced degrees in mathematics and physics, were able to finally find jobs worthy of their skills during the labor shortages of World War I . This occured when America's fledgling jet plane program was fighting to develop new tech- nologies ahead of Nazi Germany. 3 A newspapers and periodicals online through the library's website? For more information or a demonstration, check with the Reference Desk. However, even at Langley, where their obvious talents were recognized, Virginia's strict seg- regation laws mandated separate bathrooms, water fountains, lunchroom tables and even workspaces. But they perse- vered, letting their talents speak for themselves, and gradually, many barriers were broken down. After World War II, when many women went (or were sent) back to their housekeep- ing, some of the women of Langley's all-black “West Computing Group” were called on to move to NASA, partici- pating in and facilitating some of NASA's greatest successes. Among the many historic flights they worked on and made possi- ble were John Glenn's first flight, and the first moon land- ing. Showcasing in particular the lives and accomplishments of four women, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden, Hidden Figures has been made into a movie, and will be in the- aters starting December 25. Ladies of Elks send cookies and donations to Roseburg Veterans On Dec. 12, Leo and Shirley Stapleton delivered 643 dozen cookies to veterans at the Roseburg VA Hospital, along with lap robes and various clothing items donated by Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The Ladies of Elks donated $500, which allowed the pur- chase of additional clothing requested by veterans. The 1858 Elks Lodge donat- ed $1,000 for phone cards. The cookies were made by the Ladies of Elks, the Rolling Elks, VFW, Band of Brothers, the American Legion and from many residents of Greentrees. This was truly a collabora- tive effort and it took a big truck to take it all,” said Linda Tank of Ladies of Elks. “The veterans really look forward to the cookies and are deeply appreciative of all that is done for them. “We in turn thank them for their service to our country.” THIS WEEK’S FEATURES: $9 | $8 Senior/Student/Military | $7.50 Matinees Before 3 | $7 Child | $6.50 Members DECEMBER 23 - 29 COLLATERAL BEAUTY PG-13 94 MIN – Drama – With Helen Mirren “A movie that wisely contemplates how to deal with profound sadness deserves our respect for that alone.” Charlotte Observer FRI 23 SAT 24 SUN 25 12:50 PM 2:00 PM 12:50 PM 3:30 PM 4:10 PM 3:30 PM 6:20 PM 6:50 PM 6:20 PM 8:30 PM 8:30 PM MON 26 12:50 PM 3:30 PM 6:20 PM 8:30 PM TUE 27 WED 28 12:50 PM 12:50 PM 3:30 PM 3:30 PM 6:20 PM 9:30 PM 8:30 PM THU 29 12:50 PM 3:30 PM 6:20 PM 8:30 PM 12:30 PM 11:10 AM 12:30 PM 12:30 PM 12:30 PM 12:30 PM 12:30 PM PASSENGERS 3:20 PM 2:00 PM 3:20 PM 3:20 PM 3:20 PM 3:20 PM 3:20 PM NR 116 MIN – Adventure/Sci-Fi/Romance 9:00 PM 7:20 PM 9:00 PM 9:00 PM 9:00 PM 9:00 PM 9:00 PM Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt “As surprisingly traditional as it is undeniably effective.
