Elks host hoop shoot
Students
at
Siuslaw
Elementary School between
the ages of 8 to 12 years old
will be competing in a Hoop
Shoot this Friday from 8:30
a.m. until the completion of
the competition, at approxi-
mately 11 a.m.
All children attending
Siuslaw Elementary wishing
to participate will be shooting
10 free throws to qualify for
the final shoot off of 15 more
free throws.
The top finishers will quali-
fy for the district-wide
shootout in Toledo, Ore., in
early January.
If the athletes make it from
3 A
M AYORS
there, they will shoot at the
statewide competition in
Milwaukee, Ore., in mid
February.
If they are good enough to
make it from there, the
Florence Elks Lodge will send
them and a parent to the
National shoot off (place to be
determined) in March 2017.
Parents are welcome to
attend the competition, but
must sign in at the elementary
school office. The competition
will take place in the gymnasi-

The Siuslaw Watershed
Council (SWC) has chosen Liz
Vollmer-Buhl to receive its
highest honor, the “Spirit of
Siuslaw” award.
Each year, a person who
especially exemplifies work on
watershed health and involving
human and natural resources
within the region over time is
chosen for this award.
This year’s award was pre-
sented at the SWC’s annual
potluck at Mapleton High
School on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

tion, Liz Vollmer-Buhl was
described as the embodiment
of the Spirit of the Siuslaw in
many ways.
For a number of years, a
photograph hanging in the
SWC’s office showed Vollmer-
Buhl
on
Native
Plant
Distribution Day. In the photo,
she is a blur of motion while
everything around her is rela-
tively still.
Vollmer-Buhl began as a
volunteer with the watershed
council in early 2000, taking
the position of Monitoring
Coordinator in 2004 and
becoming the executive direc-
tor in 2008. She went on to lead
the council in that capacity
until last year, making her one
of the longest-serving water-
shed council executive direc-
tors in Oregon.
From her work with the
SWC, Vollmer-Buhl has gone
on to work with the Ford
Family Foundation on com-
munity development, both in
Florence and the upriver com-
munities.
Under her leadership, SWC
grew in reputation and success
at receiving grants and com-
pleting restoration projects
with a wide variety of part-
ners.
While Vollmer-Buhl’s sci-
ence, writing, technical and
coordinating skills developed
during the past 12-plus years,
she especially focused on
human resources — finding,
inspiring and enabling people
to believe in themselves, the
causes of restoration and
preservation, as well as think-
ing big and working together.
Vollmer-Buhl is credited
with fostering partnerships
on the simplest terms as
well as complex levels of long-
term diverse inter-agency proj-
ects.
The SWC said it is especial-
ly appreciative of Vollmer-
Buhl’s work with youth —
from school partnerships and
afterschool programs to intern-
ships, summer camps, field
trips and volunteering to take
on a running club and a cycling
club.
In the words of Mapleton
Schools LEAF director Lauren
Hesse, “Liz has continued to
build a community of youth
eager to both play and work on
the river.”
