Food Backpack for Kids
Together, No Child Will Go Hungry

Th e Food Backpack for Kids program began in Oct. of 2012.
Every public donation is used to purchase food only. Volunteers
fi ll food bags with nutritious, prepackaged food that provides three
ready-to-eat meals a day for the weekend, during the school year.
Currently we provide 79 at risk children in the Siuslaw and Mapleton
School Districts with weekend nourishment.
“Prior to the food ‘backpack program, Monday morn-
ings and Friday aft ernoons were the times of unusual be-
havior for some children in our schools. For the children that
had little to no food over the weekend, Monday morning
was the time when many children scrambled to satisfy their
hunger by eating everything they could get their hands on.
Some children would roam from table to table, asking their
friends for any uneaten or unwanted foods and then proceed-
ing to eat every morsel. Friday aft ernoons saw the hoarding
of food by students who knew that nothing may be at home
for the next few days. Certain students would bring their
school bags to the cafeteria and collect anything that was
given away or left behind to take home. Since the donations
of the weekend feedbags began, the mad scramble for foods
on Monday mornings and Friday aft ernoons has ceased.”

Our children should be happy, not hungry!
Food costs have risen in the past fi ve years. Th e program has been
sustained as it meets the needs of the increased number of at-risk
kids, because of people like you, who donate so we can purchase safe
nutritious foods for them. All donations are tax deductible.

We are looking for Volunteers who can work
in the giŌ shop, in the display area as a
docent assisƟ ng visitors or on a commiƩ ee.
