Today, the Siuslaw bowl-
ing teams will roll a split, so
to speak, as the boys team
hosts a home tournament at
Holiday Bowl and the girls
take to the road at Reedsport.
The home tournament,
which will include teams
from Reedsport, North Bend,
Marshfield, South Umpqua,
Springfield, Thurston and
others, will begin at 9 a.m.
Last weekend at Strike
City in Eugene, the girls team
took first place and the boys
teams were fourth and 14th,
respectively.
Siuslaw’s varsity 1 team
remained in the top four
through the first round of 20
baker games to reach the
qualifying round at Strike
City, but lost to Cottage
Grove in the semifinals
despite bowling a tourna-
ment-high 246 in the second
game against the Billies.
They
then
lost
to
Marshfield in the match for
third place.
The girls will host a tour-
ney at Holiday Bowl on
Saturday, Jan. 7.

Neither of Mapleton’s basketball
teams was able to secure a win during
Tuesday night’s home stands against
visiting Reedsport as the Sailors.
Both Mapleton teams were strug-
gling with depleted lineups due to dif-
ferent reasons.
For the girls, who were the first to
tip off, the Lady Sailors’ lineup has
only seven players to begin with.
Against the Braves, the starting five
for Mapleton — senior Josi Hays and
sophomores Erin Michael, Bailey
Mapleton sophomore Gabe
Simington leaps for the tipoff
against Reedsport. Simington had
7 points and 7 boards for
Mapleton.
Messick, Alyssa West and Haley Wells
— left an empty bench and no relief.
By comparison, the Braves had
nearly three times as many players, 13
in all, including four starting seniors.
The disparity in numbers and expe-
rience left the Lady Sailors outmanned

MID COAST LAKES
Holdover trout will be
available in most lakes.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
will slow as water tempera-
tures cool. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch
lakes are open for wild
coho until Dec. 31. Fishing
has been fair to slow.
Casting spinners near the
weed lines and trolling
plugs or spinners can be
effective on fish that
recently entered the lake.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Chinook
The Siuslaw River and
bay is open for Chinook
salmon. Fishing is slow.
Trolling herring in the
lower bay is an effective
technique. Eggs and bob-
ber can be productive in
the upper bay and river.
