Against Yoncalla, the Sailors
stayed within six points for most
of the game, thanks in large part
to a 22-point performance from
Simington, with 18 points com-
ing from 3-point shooting (six
total). Simington also chipped in
5 rebounds and a pair of steals.
Wells had 12 boards and sank
eight points to go with 4 blocks
and 2 steals.
“It was a great game that real-
ly came down to the wire,” Crook
said of the matchup.
Tied at 41-41 with 2:40
remaining on the clock, turnovers
played into Yoncalla’s hands
down the stretch. Forced to foul
for possession, the Sailors
weren’t able to close the gap
before falling, 50-41.
Still, it was an impressive
defensive performance by the
Sailors. Gabe Simington grabbed
12 rebounds, scored 6 points and
had 2 blocks from the post posi-
tion.
AJ Foster had 8 assists, 4 steals
and 3 points for the Sailors.
“In his second basketball game
ever, AJ is becoming one of those
players you can’t take off the
court,” said Crook. “He’s a great
defender and passer.”
Yoncalla was an “Elite 8” team
at state the last two seasons and a
team that beat the Sailors by an
average of 37 points a game.
“It was great to see us battle
and compete like that,” said
Crook.

The Lady Sailors had a
tougher time with Yoncalla and
Lowell, falling 54-10 to Lowell
and 48-11 to Yoncalla.
“We played two experienced
teams Friday and Saturday, and
the girls never quit,” said coach
Mike Murray. “They are getting
priceless experience the hard
way, on the job, but it’s a deter-
mined group of girls.”
Last night, Mapleton hosted
Reedsport (after press deadlines)
in a nonleague game.
This Friday’s games at Falls
City have been rescheduled for
Saturday, with the girls tipping
off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the
boys at 7 p.m.

changes in deadline locations
through the season.
Steelhead fishing is slow.
Casting spinners, drifting bait
or using a bobber and jig can
be effective. For cutthroat
trout, casting small spinners,
spoons or fly fishing streamers
or dry flies can be very effec-
tive.
WILSON RIVER: Chinook
Fall Chinook fishing is fair
on the Wilson River. The
Wilson has fished well for fall
Chinook this season, and
although things will probably
start to slow down toward the
end of the month, there are
still some good fish coming in.
Keep an eye on the weather
and River conditions. All of
the usual techniques, such as
bobber fishing, divers and bait,
and back bouncing should be
effective.
Although it’s still a little
early, Thanksgiving is time to
start thinking about winter
steelhead on the lower Wilson.
This basin has some early
returning hatchery fish and
they should start trickling in
towards the end of the month.
YAQUINA RIVER: Chinook

is open for Chinook salmon.
Fishing is slow. Trolling her-
ring in the lower bay is an
effective technique.
Eggs and bobber can be
