As the new head coach of the Lady
Sailors’ basketball program, Mike
Murray has been making the 45-
minute drive from Cheshire to
Mapleton each afternoon for two
simple reasons.
First, because he is admittedly
obsessed with the game of basketball.
And secondly, “I am thoroughly
impressed with the kids and teachers
at Mapleton,” says Murray. “They all
have big hearts. I love being here.”
With nearly 30 years coaching
experience, including four consecu-
tive trips to state and two state titles
as head coach of Lowell’s varsity
girls from 2004-07, Murray has seen
all sides of the game — as a player,
coach and even game official for 15
years.
“I think about the game all
the time,” laughs Murray. “I
wake up at 5:30 a.m. thinking
about how to improve what
we’re doing.”
Murray is the first to admit
that, in high school, he was
naive about the sport.
“I didn’t really understand
it well until I got into com-
munity college,” he says. “I
had some raw talent and abil-
ity, but good coaching
cemented my obsession for
the game and the necessity of

and holiday shoppers can buy prk
passes for only $25, which is $5 off the
regular price. Passes can easily be pur-
chased online at www.store. oregon-
stateparks.org, along with branded
holiday gift gear, such as portable
coolers, water bottles and baseball
caps.
Parking costs $5 a day at 26 Oregon
State Parks unless you have a 12- or
24-month parking permit or a same-
day camping receipt.
The 24-month pass is $50 and per-
mits are transferable from vehicle to
vehicle.
“Our December sale is the only time
we discount the annual parking per-
mit,” said Lisa Sumption, Oregon
Parks and Recreation Department
(OPRD) Director. “These make a great
gift. Your family and friends will thank
you for a year of unlimited playing,
hiking and picnicking.”
The Oregon Coast Passport is also
discounted $5 in December. The pass-
port is a multi-agency product, valid at
Oregon State Parks, US Forest
Service, Bureau of Land Management
and National Park Service sites along
the Oregon coast.
The coastal passports are on sale for
$30 — regularly $35 — in December.

on the Alsea River on Nov.
1. Fish are entering the
mainstem with the first
entering steelhead near the
town of Alsea. Casting
spinners, drifting bait or
using a bobber and jig can
be effective.

Apr. 30 and Nov. 1 through
Dec. 31.
• No fishing from a
floating device upstream
from Mill Creek.

reminded that from Knight
Park boat ramp to Sulphur

fly angling, or salmon bob-
ber angling.
