Her back-to-back state titles
apex a career that included third
place as a freshmen in 2013 and
fourth place as a sophomore in
2014. Last year, she became only
the second Lady Viking in school
history to win the state title —
three years after Katy Potter won
it in 20012.
This year’s repeat underscored
a legacy which, like the other run-
ners in Saturday’s race, Mans will
leave behind.

diverse terrain ranging from mud,
grass, concrete and eventually the
running surface of LCC’s track.
Though she had runners at her
heels for the first half of the race,
including Tillamook’s Solace
Bergeron and Scappoose’s
Linnaea Kavulich paced just 10
meters behind her, Mans shifted
gears heading up the west bank
on the final lap.
When her running shoes hit the
track surface for the final 300
meters, Mans had establish a siz-
able lead that virtually assured
her first place with a time of
18:55.
Bergeron finished 18 seconds
behind Mans for second place
(19:14) individually, with
Tillamook placing four finishers
in the top 16 to win first place
overall — edging out La Grande
72-76.
The Vikings finished seventh
overall.
In her state debut, freshman
Hannah Rannow turned in a
strong performance after being
the second Viking to cross the fin-
ish and 42nd overall in 21:48.
Senior Destinie Tatum was third

lowed by freshmen Chloe

Wartnik in 65th (22:56), Bryn
Clemment in 76th (23:31) and
Trinity Erickson in 100th (26:39).
In the boys race, senior jack
Pickell was the only representa-
tive for Siuslaw after the boys
team was narrowly edged out of
second place at district.
Pickell’s fourth-place finish in
the far West earned him a spot at
Saturday’s state meet, where he
ran a time of 17:19 for 24th indi-
vidually in his final race for the
Vikings.

Fishing
from 1C
from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31,
angling is restricted to single
point hook metal lures, fly
angling, or salmon bobber
angling.
SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead,
Chinook
The Siletz River and bay is
open for Chinook salmon.
Fishing is slow. Fish are
throughout the bay and river.
Trolling herring in the lower
bay is an effective technique.
Eggs and bobber or drifting
eggs can be productive in the
upper bay and river as the sea-
son progresses. Consult the
regulations for changes in
deadline locations through the
season.
Steelhead fishing is slow.
The majority of the summer
steelhead are in the upper
Siletz gorge. Casting spinners,
drifting bait or using a bobber
and jig can be effective. For
cutthroat trout, casting small
spinners, spoons or fly fishing
streamers or dry flies can be
very effective.
YAQUINA RIVER : Chinook
The Yaquina River and bay
is open for Chinook salmon.
Fishing is slow. Fish are
throughout the bay and river to
the angling deadlines. Trolling
herring in the lower bay is an
effective technique. Eggs and
bobber can be productive in
the upper bay and river as the
season progresses.
For cutthroat trout casting
small spinners, spoons or fly
fishing streamers or dry flies
can be very effective.
COOS COUNTY
LAKES/PONDS: Trout
Rainbow trout were stocked
in Upper Empire, Bradley,
Saunders, Powers, and
Butterfield lakes last week.
Due to extremely low water
levels, Lower Empire Lake
was not stocked. Trout that
were destined for Lower
Empire Lake were stocked into
Upper Empire and Butterfield
lakes. Currently fishing for
trout has been decent in the
deeper lakes like Eel Lake.
Anglers are having success
slowly trolling wedding rings.
TENMILE BASIN: Trout,
bass, yellow perch, coho
Trout angling in the streams
of the Tenmile Basin are now

is open all year.

.
There is no wild coho fish-
ery in Tenmile Lakes this fall.
Largemouth bass fishing has
been good over the past
month. Anglers are catching
bass near structure or on the
deep end of the weed lines
using spinner baits, jigs, or
rubber worms.
Fishing for yellow perch has
picked up in Tenmile Lakes.
Worms fished near the lake
bottom work very well for
catching yellow perch.
UMPQUA RIVER, SOUTH:
CLOSED
The South Umpqua is
closed through Nov. 30 to pro-
tect spawning fall Chinook
salmon.
WINCHESTER BAY:
Bottomfish, perch
Fishing for bottom fish in
the Triangle and South jetty

Recreational harvest of
razor clams and mussels is
closed from the entire Oregon

domoic acid. This includes all
beaches and all bays. Before
any shellfish harvest trip,
make sure to check the Oregon
Department of Agriculture
website for any updates.
Recreational ocean salmon
fishing from Cape Falcon to
Humbug Mt. is closed for
salmon fishing, except the Elk
River Chinook Terminal
Season is open through Nov.
30.
Both the All Depth and the
Nearshore Halibut seasons are
now closed.
Fishing for bottom fish
remains open at all depths.
Fishing for black rockfish
has been good from Coos Bay
south to Bandon. Fishing for
ling cod has been decent. The
marine fish daily bag limit is
seven fish and a separate daily
limit for lingcod (2).
Anglers can only keep 3
blue rockfish and 1 canary
rockfish as part of their daily
limit and there will be no har-
vest of China, quillback, or

harvest 1 cabezon per day.

“We want every Siuslaw stu-
dent at the middle and high
school to participate in sports
if they want to.
“The participation fee
should not prevent students
from being part of Siuslaw
athletics. Everyone has diffi-
cult seasons in life and being
part of a team can be such a
positive, especially during
difficult times.
“We want to help make it
happen.”
The Ian Foster Fund was
established shortly after the
death of Ian Foster in the
summer of 2005. With the
help and support of the Foster
family, a plan was developed
by the athletic department to
set aside donated monies to
be used for students who
might have difficulty paying
the total cost of athletic par-
ticipation fees.
An application process
was developed requiring stu-
dents to indicate their finan-
cial need. If a student is able
to demonstrate significant
financial need, they receive
the scholarship.
The athletic director is
responsible for reviewing the
applications and dispensing
the money to students who
meet the funding require-
ments.
If you would like to con-
tribute to the Ian Foster Fund,
donations are always wel-
come.

few who did venture out, there
was some success with lingcod
and rockfish.
The recreational groundfish
fishery is open at all depths
through March.
ODFW encourages anglers
to release all prohibited rock-
fish by using a descending
device to safely return fish to a
depth of 60 feet or more. Even
fish that are severely bloated
can survive after being
released at depth. For more
information and videos, please
see the rockfish recompression
webpage.
There’s a new rockfish in
town: the Deacon rockfish.
Deacon rockfish is a newly
identified species that was for-
merly referred to as the solid
version of blue rockfish. What
does that mean for anglers?
Nothing in 2016.
Every rule that refers to blue
rockfish (like the daily bag
limit of 3) now applies to blue
rockfish and deacon rockfish
combined.
