Empty Bowls to include ‘Joyful Balance’
The 2016 Empty Bowls
Committee has been presented
with the original artwork titled
“Joyful Balance” by local artist
Jeff Kernan.
This colorful graphic will be
featured on the 2016 Empty
Bowls posters and advertising
media.
Jeff Kernan moved from
Seattle to Florence in 1999, in
search of “peace and quiet,”
and has settled in to the
Florence area with his cat,
Diesel.
He has been an artist since
he was 20 years old, and
worked in the printing business
in Seattle prior to moving to
Florence. He has worked at
Food Share for 14 years and
currently drives the Food Share
truck for the warehouse.
After a long break, Kernan
took up his artwork again
about 10 years ago. His art
consists of digitalized photos,
or the digital manipulation of
photographs, he has taken of
his subjects. In his own words,
his artwork is photo art work,
or “phartwork.”
Kernan has displayed his
work at the Siuslaw
Public Library at the
encouragement
of
Mary Colgen Bennett,
and said he looks for-
ward to new avenues
to display his work.
A “Joyful Balance”
will be offered to the
public via raffle, with
tickets available at var-
ious locations through-
out the Florence area
prior to Empty Bowls,
as well as at the event
itself.
The winner will be
announced Sunday,
Dec. 4, at 2 p.m., at the
Empty Bowls event.
Winner need not be
present to win.
Empty Bowls 2016
will be held at the
Florence
Events
Center on Friday, Dec.
2, through Sunday,
Dec. 4.

Operation Christmas Child taking donations
The Florence Evangelical
Church will once again be the
Florence area collection point
for the world’s largest
Christmas project of its kind,
Operation Christmas Child.
Florence residents, families,
churches and groups can be
part of spreading joy to mil-
lions of children around the
world by filling shoeboxes as
Christmas gifts for children in
need.
This
year’s
National
Collection Week is Nov. 14
through 21.
Florence project coordina-
tors hope to collect 500 shoe-
box gifts, this year, for delivery
to children overseas.
Florence
Evangelical
Church, 1318 Rhododendron
Drive, is taking donated items
Monday through Sunday, 10
a.m. to 2 p.m., with additional
times on Wednesdays, 5 to 8
p.m., and Monday, Nov. 21,
from 8 to 10 a.m.

Operation Christmas Child
has been an annual project of
Samaritan’s Purse since 1993.
The project has delivered
gift-filled shoeboxes to more
than 124 million children, in
more than 150 countries and
territories.
