Booster Club offering scholarships for sports fees
The Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club
wants to make Siuslaw middle and
high school students and their families
aware that the Ian Foster Scholarship is
available to students in need of assis-
tance to pay for sports participation
fees.
Last school year, 84 Ian Foster
Scholarships were provided.
Winter sports registration is now
open. Participation fees for high school
sports are $100 and the Ian Foster
Scholarship pays for $75 of that fee.
Participation fees for middle school
sports are $75 and the Ian Foster
Scholarship pays for $40 of that fee.
School offices and coaches have these
forms available, or download one
online at www. siuslawathletic boost-
erclub.com.
“There is nothing we do as a Booster
Club that is more important than fund-
ing and providing the Ian Foster
Scholarship,” said Gina Castro-Brandt,
SABC president. “We want every
Siuslaw student at the middle and high
school to participate in sports if they
want to.
“The participation fee should not
prevent students from being part of
Siuslaw athletics. Everyone has diffi-
cult seasons in life and being part of a
team can be such a positive, especially
during difficult times.
“We want to help make it happen.”
The Ian Foster Fund was established
shortly after the death of Ian Foster in
the summer of 2005. With the help and
support of the Foster family, a plan was
developed by the athletic department
to set aside donated monies to be used
for students who might have difficulty
paying the total cost of athletic partici-
pation fees.
An application process was devel-
oped requiring students to indicate
their financial need. If a student is able
to demonstrate significant financial
need, they receive the scholarship.
The athletic director is responsible
for reviewing the applications and dis-
pensing the money to students who
meet the funding requirements.
If you would like to contribute to the
Ian Foster Fund, donations are always
welcome.
Send contributions with “Ian
Foster” in the memo area to: SABC,
PO Box 1972, Florence, OR 97439 or
donate online at www.siuslawathletic
boosterclub.com.

Siuslaw’s hopes of continuing on
into the post season toward the 4A
state volleyball championship were cut
short during a hard-fought match
against Tillamook on Saturday.
Facing off at home on Glenn Butler
Court, the Vikings lost in three sets,
C HEESEMAKERS
each of which could’ve gone to either
team during the match.
“We went down fighting,” said first-
year coach Jon Hornung, whose team
claimed a share of the Far West League
title and earned the leagues No. 1 seed
into the state playoffs against Douglas.
“We fought hard all season and
exceeded a lot of expectations.”
Against Tillamook, Siuslaw had a
difficult time against a team with mul-
tiple sources of offense in its arsenal,
and the ability to hit Siuslaw’s gaps
and between its blocking — something
no team has done effectively against
the Viks this season.
“We haven’t come up against a team
with this many weapons and speed.”

The Color-a-Thon 5k walk/run and
Fall Fitness Fair are just around the
corner on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Hosted by the Florence Community
PTA, the Color-a-Thon 5K is a
fundraising run/walk that begins at 9
a.m., starting and ending at Siuslaw
Middle School.
Participants will move through a 5K
course while being engulfed in clouds
of vibrant, non-toxic color, emerging
looking as if they’ve just burst through
a rainbow.
This is the first year for the Color-a-
Thon fundraiser, and the event is open
to both students and community mem-
bers.
Day-of registration will be available
for participants from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
at the middle school.
Adult registration for the 5K is $30
and includes an event T-shirt while
supplies last.

the upper bay and river as
the season progresses.
For cutthroat trout, cast-
ing small spinners, spoons
or fly fishing streamers or
dry flies can be very effec-
tive.
Angling for all species
