‘Smart Driver’ classes
Even the most experienced
drivers can benefit from brush-
ing up on their driving skills.
The AARP Smart Driver
Course, hosted by Lane
Community
College
in
Florence, is designed especial-
ly for drivers age 50 and older,
but is open to all drivers.
Participants learn the cur-
rent rules of the road, defen-
sive driving techniques and
how to operate a vehicle more
safely in today’s increasingly
challenging driving environ-
ment.
Learn how to manage and
accommodate common age-

related changes in vision,
hearing and reaction time.
AARP membership is not
required to take the course and
there are no driving or graded
tests in this small classroom
course. Also, most drivers
over 55 can save money on car
insurance by taking this
course, under Oregon Law
ORS 742.490.
Class fee is $20 with a $5
discount to current AARP
members. The next classes are
Nov. 17 or Jan. 19.

at City Club meeting

Mack Holman will be the
guest speaker at the next City
Club meeting, when he’ll talk
about the challenges of
obtaining commissions for
public art, owning a foundry
and casting for others, and
how he gets inspired to create
new sculptures.
The meeting will take
place Friday, Nov. 4, from
noon to 1 p.m.
Holman has created a num-
ber of bronzes for public art,
and has sculptures in Salem,
University of Oregon, Coos
Bay, North Bend, and created
the “Joy” sculpture in front of
the Siuslaw Public Library.
The City Club meeting will
be at the Ocean Dunes Golf
Links at Munsel Lake Road.
Lunch will be catered by
Marianne Brisbane, owner of
Waterfront Depot, and served
from 11:30 to noon.

celebrate 241th year
Nov. 10 will mark the
United States Marine Corps
241st anniversary since it was
founded in 1775.
Local active duty Marines,
former Marines and FMF
Corpsmen, along with their
spouses or significant others,
are invited to a birthday cele-
bration to be held at the local
Elk’s Lodge on Nov. 10.
Tickets for the occasion can

Tickets are $20 per person.
This includes a no-host bar
from 5 p.m. to the conclusion
