2016-17 property tax statements arriving
Lane County taxpayers
began receiving their 2016-17
property tax statements this
week. Tax statements and other
property tax information are
also available online at
www.lanecounty.org/at.
The first payment is due
Tuesday, Nov. 15.
The Lane County tax collec-
tor collects property tax on
behalf of 83 separate taxing
districts, including cities,
schools, education service dis-
tricts, water districts, rural fire
districts, urban renewal dis-
tricts and other taxing districts
such as park and recreation,
library and ambulance dis-
tricts.
The total property tax certi-
fied to collect for all tax levies
combined in 2016 is $495.7
million. This is approximately
3.7 percent more than in 2015.
The total amount of taxes
billed changes each year as a
result of the addition of new or
renewed local option and bond
levies, the expiration of local
option and bond levies, the 3
percent statutory increase in
Maximum Assessed Values
(MAV), the addition of new
properties to the tax roll, the
number of exemptions granted
and the number of properties
being taxed on their lower mar-
ket values instead of their
Measure 50 MAV.
Lane County’s Jan. 1, 2016,
Real Market Value (RMV)
increased to $52.8 billion from
$50.8 billion.
This is an overall increase of
approximately 3.9 percent
from Jan. 1, 2015.
Scammers impersonate IRS, law enforcement
Lane County Sheriff’s
Office warns of the most recent
phone scam in the area.
The sheriff’s office received
a report of a phone scam where
a community member received
a recorded message stating that
they were going to be taken
“under custody” by local cops
because of four “serious alle-
gations.” The voice in the mes-
sage is female and sounds
computer generated.
The recording then asked the
community member to call a
phone number. When the num-
ber is called, the community
member is put on hold until the
phone is answered by a male
with a strong accent identify-
ing himself as the IRS investi-
gations unit. The male uses
abusive language, including
name calling, when ques-
tioned, which is an indicator of
a scam. If you receive a call
that you believe is a scam, do
not call the number back. You
do not need to report the inci-
dent to your local law enforce-
ment unless you have lost
money or property as a result
of the scam.
