Students ‘Make it Happen’ at scholarship night
The annual “Make it
Happen” scholarship night will
be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, from
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Siuslaw
High School, 2975 Oak St.
Siuslaw and Mapleton High
School juniors, seniors and
parents are invited to attend.
This informative night is not
just for the top academic stu-
dents or those who plan on
attending a four-year universi-
ty. This event is made to appeal
to a vast majority of students
who want to go onto a commu-
nity college, university or tech-
nical or trade school.
The event is sponsored by
Western Lane Community
Foundation and Siuslaw High
School ASPIRE.
These organizations would
like to “bust some myths” on
scholarships available to the
youth of greater west Lane
County.
Many students and parents
think that the scholarships are
only for top scholars and ath-
letes, which is a myth.
Many of the scholarships
available do not take high aca-
demic achievement or athletic
ability or participation into
consideration. A minimum
grade point average (GPA) of
2.5 is included in several
scholarships criteria.
Although essays are often
required, it is more the content
of what you write rather than
how well it is written. Whether
you follow the instructions and
address the essay question is
often more crucial to your suc-
cess than how eloquently you
write.
This community is extreme-
ly generous in supporting its
youth and their future endeav-
ors.
Each year it might seem the
same few students receive all
the scholarships, when in fact
organizations who award
scholarships do not get a large
enough pool of applicants. It is
their intention that the thou-
sands of dollars of scholarship
money should be spread
around to a larger percentage
of graduating seniors.
Scholarships
of
$500,
$1,000 or more is worth a little
time to invest in filling out an
application. Every dollar you
are awarded is a lot more than
a dollar you save when you
graduate.
When you take out school
loans the money must be
repaid with interest. Even
$3,000 or $4,000 per year
would be a big help. Applying
to two or three dozen scholar-
ships increase the odds of you
receiving at least one or two.
There are a wide variety of
scholarships to fit every stu-
dent’s situation. There are
scholarships for those with
documented financial need and
for minorities.
But there are many that
don’t include the financially
disadvantaged or minority sta-
tus.
The single biggest hint on
being successful in securing
scholarships is finding the
scholarships that fit your situa-
tion and filling them out thor-
oughly, legibly and completely.
Competition can be fierce
but you could be the perfect
applicant that the organization
is looking for. Don’t underesti-
mate your worth but be vigilant
on taking the time to fill out the
application correctly.
Community volunteers and
scholarship representatives
will be on hand to answer
questions on filling out schol-
arship and financial aid appli-
cations. They can also dispel
any other myths that may be
keeping you or your student
from applying for scholarships.
A free USB thumb drive
with local scholarship applica-
tions will be available for par-
ticipants.
