League of Women Voters
comes to Florence church
On Thursday, Oct. 13, the
United Methodist Women will
sponsor a speaker from the
League of Women Voters at
the Florence United Methodist
Church, 333 Kingwood St. in
Florence. This event will take
place in the social hall begin-
ning at 1:30 p.m.
The League of Women vot-
ers was founded in 1920 to
provide information to tradi-
tionally under-served and

underrepresented voters
The League is a nonpartisan
political organization that
encourages informed and
active participation in govern-
ment.
The speaker will be explain-
ing the measures on the
November ballot.
Everyone is welcome to

The annual “Make it Happen” scholarship information for colleges and vocational programs night will be
held Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Siuslaw High School. Siuslaw and Mapleton high school
juniors, seniors and parents are invited to attend. Community volunteers and scholarship representatives
will be on hand to answer questions on filling out scholarship and financial aid applications. A free USB
thumb drive with local scholarship applications will be available for participants. This event is sponsored by
Western Lane Community Foundation and SHS Aspire.

Elmer Paredes, PA, joined
PeaceHealth Medical Group’s
Walk-in clinic in January as a
Certified Physician Assistant in
Florence. Paredes completed
his Physician Assistant pro-
gram in June 2002 at St.
Vincent’s Catholic Medical
Centers in New York. He has
13 years of clinical experience
in Primary Care, Sports
Douglas Johnson, DO
Medicine/Rehabilitation and
Neurology. Paredes most
recently worked at Forest Hills
Rehabilitation in New York.
Sandra Jones, NP, joined
PeaceHealth Medical Group’s
Walk-in clinic in January as a
Certified Nurse Practitioner in
Florence. Jones earned her
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
at the University of Arizona
and her Master of Science in
Nursing at Texas Tech
University. She has 12 years of
experience in clinical, hospital,
nursing home and hospice
practice, and most recently
worked at East Texas Medical
Center Rural Health Clinic.
Douglas Johnson, DO,
joined PeaceHealth Medical
Group’s Family Medicine
department in Florence in
June. Johnson completed his
internship and internal medi-
cine residency at Flint
Osteopathic Medicine in
Michigan. He has 30 years of
clinical experience and is
board-certified in Internal
Medicine. Johnson most
recently worked at Curry
Health Network in Brookings,
Oregon.
