Killing Trail
By Margaret Mizushima
Book review by Linda Weight
Killing Trail: A Timber
Creek K-9 Mystery by Margaret
Mizushima is the first in a new
series featuring a believable,
likeable lead character, Officer
Mattie Cobb, and her K-9 part-
ner, Robo.
Mizushima, who lives in
Colorado with her veterinarian
husband, sets her mysteries in
the fictitious town of Timber
Creek, Colo. Mizushima writes
about both Colorado and animal
care with obvious knowledge
and experience.
In this first mystery, we are
introduced to Mattie and learn,
through the course of the plot,
some of her back story. A life-
long resident of the town, Mattie
had a hard childhood, ending up
in foster care after her father
murdered her mother.
Mattie has also lost track of
her younger brother in the foster
care system. But Mattie had two
lucky breaks: her last foster care
home was a good one, with a
loving foster mother who
believed in Mattie and is still a
good friend; and after yet anoth-
er run-in with the local police,
the chief saw something in

Election time is just around
the corner and, while I could
not even begin to comment on
the state of the national nor
even the state election, I would
like to mention the local City
election coming up.
Two years ago there were
three candidates on the ballot
for Mayor and six candidates
for city council. In the upcom-
ing November election, there
will be three incumbents that
are running for re-election who
are unopposed.
I believe that this is in part

Enjoy demARTS!
This Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the library will
be hosting its third annual
demARTs celebration.
demARTS features 18 artists
or groups demonstrating a wide
variety of crafts and art, includ-
ing calligraphy (get your name
written in calligraphy), fiber arts,
altered journals, felting, water-
color, button making, zentangle,
watercolors and more.
The Fiber Arts Guild will have
a demonstration in the library
lobby of needlepoint, weaving,
spinning, and the Last Resort
Players will be presenting a pre-
view of “Pirates of Penzance” at
1 p.m. at the library.
Don’t miss this wonderful, art
filled day.
Free storytelling workshop
On Saturday, Oct. 22, from 2
to 4 p.m., Portland Story Theater
will be presenting a workshop on
the art of storytelling. Its work-
shops teach “intentional story-
telling,” when people will learn
how to tell stories improvisation-
ally by being resourceful and
using the power of spontaneity.
Workshop size is limited to 25
participants, so pre-registration
is required.
Stop by the Reference Desk or
call 541-997-3132 to sign-up.
For those who would just like
to listen to storytelling, the
Portland Story Theater will be
doing a free show at the library
that evening at 7 p.m.

Mattie’s tough girl shell, steering
her into track and field, helping
Mattie turn her school failures
into success.
With a recommendation for
the police academy, Mattie’s life
was changed. After scoring high-
er than the other officers in her
group, Mattie received advanced
training as a K-9 officer and was
paired with Robo.
Now they are a team and have
the challenge of proving them-
selves to the department, in
which Mattie is both the only
female officer and Latina.
Mizushima subtly inter-
weaves the kinds of hazing and
prejudice that a young female,
Hispanic officer would face in a
traditional, previously all-male
workplace, especially one where
the men value strength and
toughness.

Nevada Barr or C.J. Box, give
“Killing Trail” by Margaret
Mizushima a try.

M AYOR OF F LORENCE
due to the culture change that
has taken place in the City of
Florence over the past two
years.
Early in 2015, we created a
5-point work plan and adopted
a theme of “A City in Motion.”
From there, we have made
great progress in terms of city
services, streets and park
improvements,
economic
development and improve-
ments in our relationships with
local, county and state agen-
cies.
We have set the stage for
some exciting things that have
already begun to happen and
more that will be coming in the
near future.
My profound thanks go out
to our City Council, which has
worked very hard as a team to
make this possible.
And also to our dedicated
staff that has taken on a sub-
stantially larger workload,
doing so within budget and
without adding any staff.
Congratulations!
And yes, I am running again
for Mayor. With no one else on

lot of campaigning. I will, how-

The reason for this is simply
so that the community will not

appreciate the trust that has

I have enjoyed the last two
