‘Where ART Thou?’ at Backstreet P UBLIC INVITED TO FRAA’ S ONE - YEAR

Have you ever wanted to
meet other visual artists in our
community and network with
them? How about discovering
new art forms and techniques?
Backstreet Gallery (BSG)
artists have wanted this oppor-
tunity also, so members are
hosting a special event at the
gallery Friday, Oct. 21, starting
at 6 p.m., called “Where ART
Thou?”
Upon arrival, guests will be
given a numbered nametag,
and drawings will be held
every 20 minutes for door
prizes donated by BSG artists.
Appetizers and spirits will
be served and there will be a
table available where artists are
urged to place photos or a
small sample of their artwork
for others to enjoy.
During the event, a brief
welcome and introduction to
BSG will be given by president
Pattie Brooks-Anderson.
“We have so many amazing
artists in the Florence area with
a wide diversity of talents, and
we urge you to come to this
event as we talk and get to
know each other,” said Brooks-
Anderson.
Backstreet Gallery is in Old
Town at 1421 Bay St., across
from Mo’s Restauant.

Salvation Army offering estate planning
The Salvation Army’s Office
of Gift Planning is offering a
seminar in Florence on
Monday, Oct. 10, at the
Driftwood Shores Resort’s
Surfside Restaurant.
The presenters will be Bill
Olson, Director of Planned
Giving for The Salvation Army
and member of the Financial
Planning Association, and
Jessica Rogers, Estate and Tax
Law Attorney with Luvaas &
Cobb Law Firm in Eugene.
The focus of the seminar
will be estate planning and
charitable giving.
“We find that about 50 per-
cent to 70 percent of our own
supporters do not yet have a
will or trust, or the one they
have may need revisions due to
changes in their lives or prop-
erty holdings,” said Olson.
“We hope to encourage people
to consider the importance of
having a current will and mak-
ing it an instrument of their
life’s legacy they wish to leave
their family, friends and com-
munity.”
Olson’s work is usually with
the professional advisors of
donors who wish to make sub-
stantial gifts to The Salvation
Army. One of the law firms
and attorneys he has worked
with is Rogers of Luvaas &
Cobb.
“She’s an extraordinary
young attorney who has done
some amazing work with some
very complicated estates,”
Olson said. “She knows how to
communicate the most basic
tenets of estate planning and
the considerations that may
generally affect anyone who
has a family to care for or
property that will need to be
redistributed in the event of
their passing, or their incapaci-
ty to make important decisions
in the future.”
Many people pass on with-
out a will or trust in place. In
this case, the State of Oregon
has rules that govern the dispo-
sition of one’s property and
affairs to assure that all debts
and taxes are paid.
The costs of administering
the estate in this process will
be paid out of estate proceeds.
What is left over may pass on
to family or others, but it takes
a will to assure your property is
passed on according to your
desires and delivered to your
designated beneficiaries.
There may also be signifi-
cant tax savings by working
with a professional advisor in
arranging for transfers of assets
to various trusts that may avoid
probate altogether or remain
private from public records and
scrutiny.
“The main reason we find
that people don’t have a will is
that they assume that the
process is so complex and
expensive that they cannot
afford it,” Olson said. “The
opposite is true. You cannot
afford to not have a will and a
plan for how your estate will
pass on to the people and caus-
es that you care most about.”

The public is invited to
attend a celebration by the non-
profit Florence Regional Arts
Alliance (FRAA) on Friday,
Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m.
It has been one year since
FRAA moved to its 120 Maple
St. location and held its grand
opening. FRAA will celebrate
the anniversary with music by
guitarist Denny Weaver,
catered food by Le Bouchon
and door prizes from partici-
pating artists.
The first year has been a
successful one, largely due to
FRAA’s supporting members
