“It’s a common problem,
way too common, that affects
all social strata. It hits all
groups sooner or later,” he
added.
Wiegan hopes the march
will help younger generations
grow up without the cycle of
abuse.
The Siuslaw High School
band and members of the
cheerleading team will par-
ticipate in the march.
SOS also plans to work
with area schools on a series
of presentations on healthy
relationships, control and
abuse later this year.
The march will also fea-
ture bagpipes.
“It’s a solemn occasion,
but not sad. We focus on the
survival aspects. These sur-
vivors remake their lives and
thrive. And that’s a reason to
celebrate,” Wiegan said.
The March Against
Domestic Violence ceremony
begins at Veteran’s Memorial
Park on Bay Street at 12:30
p.m. Oct. 2, with music from
Siuslaw High School band.
Marchers will start at 1 p.m.
The march proceeds along
Bay Street to the Port of
Siuslaw boardwalk, and only
takes about 15 minutes.

Potter’s Tire, Automotive names new owners
Florence’s Potter Tire and Automotive
has a new family in charge.
AJ Shervin was raised in his family
business playing in the tires and pumping
gas at their full-service tire, automotive
and gas station.
He went on to WyoTech after high
school and graduated with an associates
degree in applied service management.
He then worked at two different car deal-
erships and ended up at the family shop
as the head mechanic — eventually run-
ning the shop alongside his father and
uncle.
Being born and raised in a small town
in a family business, Shervin has many
experiences that help him today. His wife,
Megan, also grew up in her family busi-
ness and eventually ended up a partner.

“The corps’ original propos-
al stopped at Umpqua (River)
and I’m happy to say they have
reconsidered their opinion and

couple fell in love with the friendly com-
munity, similar to the small town they
were raised in — which is what brought
them here.
The Shervins were taught that a solid
work ethic and the importance of excep-
tional customer service are the keys to a
successful business.
“We are excited to be a part of such a
wonderful community and to have the
opportunity to carry on the legacy Paul
has made with Potter’s Automotive,” said
AJ.
The Shervins welcome the community
to come experience the same quality,
pricing and honest work.

general permit. In the future
that should help streamline the
dredging permitting process,”
he said.
Leskin also reported that the
state and the Port of Coos Bay
have not yet reached an
Intergovernmental Agreement
on the administration and oper-
ation of the portable dredge
and that working budgets have
not been agreed on for the ports
that will use the dredge.
“The rates are going to go up
significantly because Coos Bay
is a union shop,” he said. “The
dredge is in Gold Beach. The
schedule is to get it (here) the
beginning of November. They
are under a little bit of pressure
to get the dredge this year
given the bad rains last
December.”
In reference to a letter from
U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley
announcing a permanent 10
percent set-aside for small
ports, including Siuslaw, in the
federal Harbor Maintenance
Trust Fund, commission
President Ron Caputo said, “I

her for all the work they have
done to make this happen.”
