St. Mary’s Men’s Club treasurer Dan Gilday (right) presents a $500 check to Renee LaCosse, St. Mary’s Youth Minister Coordinator. LaCosse
said, “St. Mary’s Youth Group has two retreats every year. Not only do the students look forward to these events, their spiritual lives grow
by leaps and bounds each time we have one. They have been asking for more retreats and this donation makes it possible.”
Humans tell stories to
remember, understand and
connect with each other.
Join the founders of
Portland Story Theater for a
lively, interactive two-hour
workshop on the contempo-
rary art of personal story-
telling Saturday, Oct. 22,
from 2 to 4 p.m. at the
Siuslaw Public Library.
Participants will learn how
to identify their stories and
what it takes to share them
with an audience. The work-
shop will explore the necessity
of vulnerability in storytelling,
as well as techniques for
bringing your stories to life.
Portland Story Theater will
perform excerpts from its sto-
ries while engaging partici-
pants to begin exploring sto-
ries of their own.
Portland Story Theater was
founded
in
2004
by
Lawrence Howard and Lynne
Duddy. Their mission is “to
build community, promote
understanding and fostering
radical empathy by giving
voice to the real, true stories
of everyday people.”
This workshop will be lim-
ited to 25 participants, so pre-
registration is required.
Anyone who would like to
sign up for this workshop can
stop by the Siuslaw Public
Library, 1460 Ninth St. in
Florence, or call the refer-
ence desk at 541-997-3132.
The workshop will be fol-
lowed later in the day with a
storytelling show performed
by five members of the
Portland Story Theater,
beginning at 7 p.m.
Soroptimists
seek award
applicants
Soroptimist International
Club of Florence (SIF) is
seeking applicants for their
annual “Live Your Dream
Award.”
This award is for a single
woman who is head of house-
hold and wants to further her
education. The funds are
given directly to the individ-
ual to offset living expenses
while attending school.
Last year, SIF gave $1,000
to a local woman whose
application was then for-
warded to the Soroptimist
International of the Americas
(SIA) Northwest Region to
be included in a pool for an
additional award. She was
selected to receive an addi-
tional award of $1,500.
The application period is
open through Nov. 15.
The application can be
found on the SIA Website at
www.soroptimist.org/live
yourdreamawards.html, then
click on the Live Your Dream
link. This page gives more
information about the award.
On the left side of the page
click on Application Process
for full instructions and a
video.
If there are any questions
about the award or filling out
the application, call SIF
member Nancy Bosket at
541-902-7250 or email
siflorence@soroptimist.net.
