David Burke
About the Author
David Burke has been creating art for his family, friends and commercially for nearly fi ve decades. He was born in
Cottonwood, Idaho in 1950 and considers himself to be “country”. Most of his considerable body of work is a refl ection of
his outdoor lifestyle, his family, his friends, and the world around him. His interest in art began at the age of 6 years old
when he was taken under the wing of his uncle Noel Preston, a cartoonist. Although David has since studied art (some
what) formally at a number of universities and colleges, cartooning and cartoon illustrations are, and have always been
his bliss and his main focus. His writing career began at the age of 12 when one of his poems was selected to appear as
the dedication for the school’s poetry publication. His work received high praise from (the now defunk) local press. His
literary achievements have, however, languished
since those auspicious days. After his discharge
from the navy in 1969 David took off to “look for
America”. For several years he straddled the fi ne line between serendipity and
disaster by working odd jobs, and earning a little extra by selling: cartoons, band
posters, tattoo designs, personal greeting cards, or pencil sketches he drew in
bars, on street corners, or at the ubiquitous rock concerts of the era. His itinerant
period brought him into close contact with: cops, hippies, hookers, bikers, rock
musicians, university presidents, and petty royalty of dubious lineage (to name
a few). This diverse cross-section of humanity have been his subject matter, and
consumer base for many years. David lives in Florence, Oregon with his wife,
3 children and his airedale terrier ChiknBone. His interests include: fi shing,
boating, shooting, history and historical events, and all things celtic. He likes to
work with leather, and he also enjoys collecting arms and legs.
