M . Siuslaw News The Mapleton cross country team had a new pair of running shoes on the course over the weekend as Dominic Wells joined Cole Spencer and Richy Gatelum at the Prefontaine Memorial 5K in Coos Bay Saturday. “I’m really proud of these guys,” said Sailors coach Aaron Longo. “They continue to improve and run with dedi- cation.” In Wells’ debut, he ran the course in 22:20.7. Spencer set a 57.4-second personal best with his time of 21:44.9, and Gatelum had the 12th-fastest time for a freshman at the meet with a time of 21:40.2, which was a PR of 2:26. “At the end, I was just spent,” said Gatelum. For Wells, it meant returning home at 2 a.m. the night before after playing on the gridiron at Falls City for Mapleton, then lacing his running shoes the next morning by 7 a.m. “Dominic played through a rough football game the night before. That’s real dedication,” said Longo. For Wells, he had a simple focus in his first cross country race. “The only thing between me and the finish line was five guys that I wanted to pass,” said Wells. “That, and some vomit on the track. I passed them all and jumped over the rest.” • SHS VOLLEYBALL HOSTS D OUGLAS 7 P . M . Sept. 23 • MHS FOOTBALL HOSTS A LSEA 7 P . M . • SHS FOOTBALL AT S. U MPQUA 7 P . M .
