transients,” Barrett said.
Dry and warm conditions
compounded to spread the fire,
though the two agencies were
able to contain the fire before
afternoon winds could spread it
to nearby trees.
Department of Forestry will
continue the investigation.
While Siuslaw Valley was
still at the brush fire, crews
received the second call of the
day at 1:30 p.m. — a house in
the 2100 block of 17th Street.
Firefighters worked to contain
the fire for several hours, but the
house and its contents were a
near total loss, with only a few
personal items saved.
“It appears to be started by
smoking materials,” Barrett
said.
The fire began outside the
house near a door to the garage.
Before long, it spread up the
outside wall and into the attic.
Barrett said the windows of
the house blew out right as fire-
fighters arrived.

Marcy
Kellermen and their teenaged
son lived in the home with their
pets.
“The man and the teen were
home at the time but got out
OK. We found out later that the
pets were also found safe,”
Barrett said.
He added that firefighters
always check for pets and people
when they respond to a fire.
“We were concerned, too,
when we heard the pets might
be inside,” he said.
The local Disaster Response
Team with the American Red
Cross also responded to the fire.
Red Cross provided resources to
help address the immediate
basic needs of the family,
including temporary housing,
food, clothing, information
about recovery services and
health and mental health servic-
es.
Florence residents also
stepped forward with supplies
and created a fundraising cam-
paign to assist the Kellermen
family at GoFundMe.com/2p
47fd34.
Later that night, Siuslaw
Valley received a dispatch about
a third fire.
At 11:30 p.m., a motorhome
caught fire in front of Dunes
Cafe on Highway 126.
According to Barrett, the
driver had just purchased the
vehicle in Veneta and was on her
way home to Lakeside. Engine
difficulties prompted her to pull
over.
She fought to put out flames
beneath the engine compart-
ment with a fire extinguisher.
Firefighters were unable to
save the rest of the vehicle.
“It was a busy, tiring day,”
Barrett said. “Training more
volunteers would really help on
days like today.”
He also said that the fire dan-
ger will continue until there is a
larger change in the weather.
“Absolutely be on alert. The
danger will not pass until we
have two weeks of rain to soak
the ground and raise the mois-
ture level. Things are still real-
ly dry,” he said.

community and grants totaling
$5 million, this wraps up the
largest fundraising campaign
to date in Florence. The open
house will allow donors and
the community to see firsthand
how the expansion will better
serve the needs of Florence and
surrounding communities.
