PFLAG to celebrate fifth
anniversary at next meeting
Much has happened in the
five years since the very
first meeting “for those poten-
tially interested in PFLAG”
was held at the Siuslaw Public
Library in September 2011.
To celebrate the fifth
anniversary of that first
meeting, PFLAG Florence
will return to the site of its
first
meeting
—
the
Conference Room of the
Siuslaw Public Library, 1460
Ninth St. in Florence — for
its regular monthly meeting
on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 6:30
p.m.
In October, regular meet-
ings will return to the Florence
campus of Lane Community
College.
As always, the meeting is
free and open to the public,
and refreshments will be
served.
Come meet the board, find
out more about the organiza-
tion nationally and regionally,
and get a look at the free
resources PFLAG makes
available at every meeting.
PFLAG is the country’s
largest organization for par-
ents, families, friends and
straight allies united with peo-
ple who are lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender
(LGBT).

Award-winning author Mark
Haddon is best known for his hit
novel “The Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night-Time.”
In “The Pier Falls and Other
Stories,” Haddon has written
nine dazzling stories diverse in
style but united in emotional
power.
In the title story, an unnamed
narrator describes with cool pre-
cision a catastrophe that strikes a
seaside town, both tearing lives
apart and bringing them togeth-
er.
In a prize-winning story “The
Gun,” a boy’s life is marked by
the afternoon he encounters a
semiautomatic pistol belonging
to his friend’s older brother; in
“The Island,” a Greek princess is
abandoned on an island by her
abductor; in “The Boys Who
Left Home to Learn Fear,” a
group of adventurers travel deep
in the Amazon jungle but discov-
er the gravest danger lurking
among their own number.
The characters here are often
isolated physically or estranged
from their families, yet they
yearn for connection.
Drawing inventively from his-
tory, myth, folktales and modern

all about what can happen

get caught up by Latin
rhythms.
You might “Begin with the
Beguine” in “Hernando’s
Hideaway” and then Mambo
with a nice Italiano in old
Milano on your way to Napoli

the Bossa Nova” if you end
up spending “A Day in the
Life of a Fool.”
You won’t be “Desafinado”
(slightly out of tune) if you
make sure you do a “Summer
Samba” to “The Rhythm of
the Night.”
If it’s “Too Hot to Samba,”
just catch the “Wave” and fol-
low “Nica’s Dream” to some
“Quiet Nights” by a window
looking out on the mountains
and the sea.

Story Time and
Lego Club are back
September marks the return of
two popular children’s pro-
grams.
Twice-weekly, Story Time
with Ms. Gayle is a time spent
on hearing great stories, playing
games and enjoying fun craft
activities.
Story Time is each Tuesday
and Friday at 10:30 a.m.
The Lego Club is held the first
and third Friday of each month
at 2:30 p.m., either in the
Bromley or Conference room.
Kids from grades 2 through 6
are invited to come and enjoy
creating things with the ever
popular Legos.

expecting to receive a book
that’s been on hold for you, you
will immediately be notified
when available — you don’t
have to wait for the mail and you
help save the library postage.

three days before your materials
are due, alerting you to either
renew the checkout or return the
items. Also, you can receive
overdue notices by email.
And finally, if you fail to
renew your library account,
which is required each year,
you’ll get an email a month after
it expires reminding you to
renew. The accounts need to be
renewed so that we have an
opportunity to update any
changes to address, email or
contact information.
If not renewed, your account
will ultimately be dropped off
the library system in 18 months.
So, be sure to provide your
email address, for some great
advantages.
Mapleton Branch
The Mapleton library is locat-
ed at 88148 Riverview Ave., in
the Lion’s Club Building. With
a nice view of the Siuslaw River,
it’s a wonderful place to sit and
enjoy a good book or read the
newspaper.
The library also has books,
magazines, DVDs and videos,
recorded books, Internet com-
puters, wireless Internet access,
a rotating art display and more.
Hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
