Rods ’N’ Rhodies revving up for annual show
The City of Florence and the
Florence Area Chamber of
Commerce will host the ninth-
annual invitational Rods ’N’
Rhodies Car Show, which will
be Friday through Sunday,
Sept. 9 to 11, for high-end hot
rods and custom cruisers from
1976 and earlier.
Each
year,
Florence’s
Historic Old Town comes alive
with the sights and sounds of
more than 100 of America’s
best rods and cruisers, music,
fun and games. Get a sneak
peek of these amazing vehicles
during the registration begin-
ning at noon Friday at the
Florence Les Schwab Tire
Center.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Bay Street will close
for the show and shine event,
classic car cruise music and
raffle prizes that will be given
out every half-hour. At 4 p.m.,
the official car cruise will wind
its way through Old Town to
the sounds of ’50s and ’60s
music and the roar-and-rumble
of dozens of classic rides.
The show and shine resumes
Sunday at 9 a.m. and continues
until noon, when several
awards, including Best in
Show, will be presented.
The winner of Best in Show
will have their vehicle featured
on next year’s promotional
poster, as was with last year’s
winner featured on this year’s
poster.
New this year to the mix of
fun events is the showing of the
cult film classic “Deuce of
Spades.” Hot Rod Magazine
calls it “The best hot rod film
since ‘American Graffiti.’” The
Star Phoenix Press called it
“Spectacular! Best period-per-
fect hot rod film!”
The Deuce of Spades itself
will be on display during the
show and shine events in Old
Town Florence.
The film will have its
Florence debut Saturday, Sept.
10, at City Lights Cinemas,

School district Superintendent
to speak at FACC Sept. 7
Siuslaw School District
Superintendent
Andy
Grzeskowiak will speak at the
monthly meeting of the
Florence Area Community
Coalition on Wednesday, Sept.
7, at 9 a.m. in the Bromley
Room of the Siuslaw Public
Library.
Grzeskowiak will provide
updates about the Florence
schools and share his vision
for the future of the school
system. Grzeskowiak began
his tenure as superintendent on
July 1, but is not new to the
schools. He has served in a
variety of roles for the past 22
years and has much to share.
The featured agency for this
month is Siuslaw Outreach
Services. Those who come to
the meeting are invited to
donate children’s clothing, all
sizes, or cash to help SOS pro-
vide vouchers for laundry and
showers.
The number of persons
needing assistance from SOS
has ballooned this summer and
donations are greatly appreci-
ated.
Community members who
have not joined FACC have an
opportunity to enter a drawing
for a free annual membership.
The meeting is open to the
general public..
