“The No. 1 thing Boys and
Girls Club said to us was to
make sure that no boy or girl is
left behind,” Linton said. “To
help in that, they have offered
to donate some funds for schol-
arships.”
Trent presented $500 to
SYSA for scholarships.
“We would like to make sure
that everybody in the commu-
nity understands how much we
support you and stand behind you,”
he said. “We want to help you in any
way we can and say thank you for all
that you do.”
SYSA’s active board has worked
throughout the summer to get the
association ready for the fall soccer
season.
Attendance
from 1A
During the last year of his
two-year tenure at Yamhill
Carlton, the district saw its
non-chronically absent inter-
mediate school attendance
numbers for students attending
90 percent of school days or
more increase from 81 percent
to 88.5 percent.
“We had the process in
place the year before and the
number only moved by two
percent,” Ulrich said. “Then
we got more aggressive and it
moved up an additional seven
percent. You have to create
that culture and that takes
time.”
Ulrich believes that devel-
oping better attendance starts
with creating a culture that
places an emphasis on only
being absent when it is
absolutely necessary. He con-
cedes that this takes time.
“Oregon, statewide, has had
pretty abysmal attendance,”
Ulrich said. “To improve the
attendance district wide is one
of Superintendent Andy
Grzeskowiak’s goals. I can
help improve it.”
Ulrich has multi-genera-
tional ties to Florence and the
Siuslaw School District.
Trent said, “You have a
tremendous board and group of
people who are passionate and
love these kids as much as we
do at the Boys and Girls Club.
You’re really fortunate with them.
And Cameron is my new best
friend.”
Youth registration closes Sept. 9
and the season begins the week of
Sept. 12.

“My father graduated from
Siuslaw and my grandfather
and grandmother taught here,”
he said. “My grandfather also
was a principal here for one or
two years.”
Ulrich first met
Grzeskowiak when he was stu-
dent teaching.
“I met Leonard many years
ago when he was doing his
student teaching at Siuslaw
High School,” Grzeskowiak
said. “He even did a short
rotation in my classroom. He
showed great communication
and interpersonal skills even
back then as a student
teacher.”
He added, “He has served
as a dean of students and
assistant principal in other dis-
tricts. Beyond his impressive
resume and interview, every
recommendation was glowing.
Leonard will be a great addi-
tion to the Siuslaw School
District team.”
Ulrich and his wife Lindsay
have two children, a daughter
who will be entering first
grade and a son beginning
sixth grade.
“During the interview I said
I have been trying to move to
Florence since the fifth grade
and now that I’m almost 40, I
finally did it,” Ulrich said.
