SeaDog fishing boat caught
fire. While its deckhand

was declared a total loss.
The long-time Newport

members are taking donations
to help rebuild the SeaDog.
Donations can be made at
any Banner Bank Branch.
Make checks payable to:
Seven Fires Foundation
(memo: SEADOG FUND)
Any funds not used to
rebuild the SeaDog will go to
the Maritime Angels fund to
support future needs of fishing
families.
“Thank you to everyone
who has come forward to
help,” said SeaDog captain
John Mygatt.
Online donations can be
made at www.SaveTheSEA

The Curious Charms of
Arthur Pepper
By Phaedra Patrick
Book review by Linda Weight
Sixty-nine year old Arthur
Pepper is a quiet man, living a
quiet life. He gets out of bed at
exactly the same time he always
did when his wife was alive,
dresses in the same gray slacks
and mustard-colored sweater-
vest that he always did, and usu-
ally hides from his well-inten-
tioned neighbor when she brings
him casseroles and cakes.
His daughter is worried about
him but can’t seem to help. His
son emigrated to Australia and is
busy with his new life, job and
family and never calls.
Then, on the one-year
anniversary of his wife’s death,
Arthur decides to finally dispose
of her clothes. And he finds
something unusual: a gold
charm bracelet which he doesn’t
ever remember seeing his wife
wear in their 40 years of mar-
riage, tucked into the toe of one
of her boots.
There are eight heavy gold
charms on the bracelet, and one
of them, an elephant with a ruby
eye, has, of all things, a phone
number etched into it
Curious, Arthur calls the num-
ber, which turns out to not only
still be connected, but is in India,
and discovers that, before they
were married, his wife lived in
India for a time.
Now even more curious,
Arthur begins to search for the
stories behind each charm, and
with each discovery, learns more
and more about the beloved wife
he thought he knew so well.
Along his path of discovery,
Arthur meets and befriends peo-
ple he never would have encoun-
tered in his quiet life, and finds
that he is stronger and more
resilient and adaptable than he
(or his family) ever believed him
to be.
“The Curious Charms of
Arthur Pepper,” by Phaedra
Patrick, is a sweet (but not sac-
charine) story about grief and
recovery, hope, healing and self-
discovery, told with humor and
whimsy.
Borrowing material from
other libraries
Do you ever need a book or
other material which we don’t
have here at the Siuslaw Public
Library? You can always ask if
we can order it on “interlibrary
5 A
loan.” Interlibrary loan is a sys-
tem where we search for the
material at other libraries and
request to borrow it for you.
Books are usually the easiest
to borrow. Many libraries have
restrictions on lending audiovi-
sual materials such as DVDs,
videos and recorded books, as
well as special collections such
as genealogy or local history, but
it’s always worth a try to see if
we can borrow it.
The next time you need some-
thing just stop by the reference
desk and we will see if we can
help you out!

30-year mortgage.
The community is invited to
drive by or stop and look
around and see the volunteers
working on the homesite.
These volunteers range from
carpentry, painting, baking
cookies or making sandwiches.
Lots of lunches are packed
each work day and delivered to
the worksite by volunteers
willing to bring sandwiches
and other treats.
